INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER "An astounding triumph . . . Profound . . . Achingly wise . . . A recovery memoir like no other." --Entertainment Weekly (A) "Riveting . . . Beautifully told." --Boston Globe "An honest and important book . . . Vivid writing and required reading." --Stephen King "Perceptive and generous-hearted . . . Uncompromising . . . Jamison is a writer of exacting grace." --Washington Post From the New York Times bestselling author of The Empathy Exams comes this transformative work showing that sometimes the recovery is more gripping than the addiction. With its deeply personal and seamless blend of memoir, cultural history, literary criticism, and reportage, The Recovering turns our understanding of the traditional addiction narrative on its head, demonstrating that the story of recovery can be every bit as electrifying as the train wreck itself. Leslie Jamison deftly excavates the stories we tell about addiction--both her own and others'--and examines what we want these stories to do and what happens when they fail us. All the while, she offers a fascinating look at the larger history of the recovery movement, and at the complicated bearing that race and class have on our understanding of who is criminal and who is ill. At the heart of the book is Jamison's ongoing conversation with literary and artistic geniuses whose lives and works were shaped by alcoholism and substance dependence, including John Berryman, Jean Rhys, Billie Holiday, Raymond Carver, Denis Johnson, and David Foster Wallace, as well as brilliant lesser-known figures such as George Cain, lost to obscurity but newly illuminated here. Through its unvarnished relation of Jamison's own ordeals, The Recovering also becomes a book about a different kind of dependency: the way our desires can make us all, as she puts it, "broken spigots of need." It's about the particular loneliness of the human experience-the craving for love that both devours us and shapes who we are. For her striking language and piercing observations, Jamison has been compared to such iconic writers as Joan Didion and Susan Sontag, yet her utterly singular voice also offers something new. With enormous empathy and wisdom, Jamison has given us nothing less than the story of addiction and recovery in America writ large, a definitive and revelatory account that will resonate for years to come.

My project was to initiate the promulgation of Two-Way Prayer (TWP) to the recovering community of Region 7 of Alcoholics Anonymous, Southeast Texas. Two-Way Prayer is explained as listening for God’s voice as part of morning quiet time, which includes spiritual reading, meditation, prayers of petition, and spiritual journaling related to the thoughts and directions one receives. Two-Way Prayer not only requires lifting our minds and hearts to God and speaking to God but also opening our hearts and minds to God, listening to God, and writing down what God says to us. The theological support for the project was based on the asceticism of monastic life and the theology of spiritual direction, which has been encouraging “listening to God,” praying for inspiration, and spiritual journaling for centuries. The Ten Commandments and a recent book, In Sinu Jesus (On the Bosom of Jesus): When Heart Speaks to Heart, A Journal of a Priest at Prayer, written by an anonymous Benedictine monk, were also sources drawn upon for this project. To accomplish my purpose, I contacted two directors of two faith-based facilities that treat and work with recovering alcoholics in South Central Texas. After I explained my project, I received permission to begin my interactive sessions. I completed the approved program in one month. The feedback from both treatment facilities indicated an “improved conscious contact with God.” Through completing the project, I learned that 1) TWP is teachable and acceptable in small groups of the recovering community and 2) I will interact weekly with smaller committed groups as a spiritual coach. A subsequent smaller group reinforced that.1 Benedictine Monk, In Sinu Jesus: When Heart Speaks to Heart, A Journal of a Priest at Prayer (Seattle, WA: Angelico Press, 2016). --

The New York Times bestselling author of the forthcoming God's Wisdom for Navigating Life uncovers the essential message of Jesus, locked inside his most familiar parable. Newsweek called renowned minister Timothy Keller "a C.S. Lewis for the twenty-first century" in a feature on his first book, The Reason for God. In that book, he offered a rational explanation of why we should believe in God. Now, in The Prodigal God, Keller takes his trademark intellectual approach to understanding Christianity and uses the parable of the prodigal son to reveal an unexpected message of hope and salvation. Within that parable Jesus reveals God's prodigal grace toward both the irreligious and the moralistic. This book will challenge both the devout and skeptics to see Christianity in a whole new way.

The pioneering scholar and author of Food and Faith and Living the Sabbath asserts that Christianity has slid off its rightful foundation, arguing that the faith only makes sense and can only be expressed in a healthy way if it seen as based on love, with a mission of training others in the way of love. It’s often said that God is love, yet his message of compassion and caring for others is often overshadowed by the battles dividing us politically, culturally, and religiously. Why does Christianity matter if it isn’t about love? asks Duke University professor of Theology and Ecology Norman Wirzba. The Way of Love invites readers to experience Christianity that is centered on love. Extensive theological training cannot replace the way of love that transforms and connects each of us to God and the faith, Wirzba contends. Interweaving illuminating testimonials, historical references, and Scripture, he reveals how love allows us to move into the fullness of life; when we do not love we lose our faith. “To fail to love,” he reminds us, “is to lose God.”
