Women in the Ministry of Jesus

A Study of Jesus' Attitudes to Women and Their Roles as Reflected in His Earthly Life

Women in the Ministry of Jesus

Women in the Ministry of Jesus is a study of both of Jesus' attitudes towards women as reflected in his words and deeds, and of the women who were part of his ministry, or who interacted with him according to the Gospel accounts. The book seeks to provide a balanced analysis of the relevant Biblical material, and also the historical background necessary to illuminate the setting of the Gospel events. Particular attention is given to related issues such as Jesus' views on marriage, the family and the single life, as well as his teaching on adultery, the laws of the clean and unclean and the sabbath. Witherington concludes that Jesus cannot be categorized neatly either as chauvinist or as feminist.

Bible Women

All Their Words and Why They Matter

Bible Women

Bible Women All Their Words and Why They Matter Lindsay Hardin Freeman Women of the Bible have been trapped in dry and dusty literary caskets for centuries. While a few women, such as Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, and Mary Magdalene, are familiar, many of the women who speak in the Bible have long been ignored. Yet their words are part of God's Word, the Bible, for a reason. Through these women, God spoke, intervened, changed, illustrated, and proclaimed the story of redemption. In this groundbreaking book, Episcopal priest Lindsay Hardin Freeman identifies every woman who speaks in the Bible, providing their words, context, and historical background. We learn which women speak the most (hint: it's not Mary ) and which books of the Bible have the fewest words from women. We hear the only conversation in the Bible between a mother and daughter (and it's not pretty), the words of a woman who eats her own child, and the triumphant exclamation of a woman telling the world about the risen Christ. Questions at the end of each chapter encourage individual or small-group reflection about what we might learn from each of these women and how God is speaking through them to us. Step into God's sacred circle of mothers, grandmothers, warriors, prophets, prostitutes, and murderers. You won't come out the same.

Your Women Did Prophesy

Your Women Did Prophesy

The book Your Women Did Prophesy documents evidence for biblical and historical precedent for womens participation in preaching and prophesying ministries. It cites specifi c activities of women as recorded in the New Testament, apocryphal writings, and a selection of early church fathers that refer to the fi rst two centuries. The focus of the book is on the activity of women rather than on opinions expressed about the role of women. This book uses the historical critical method of interpretation applied to ancient primary sources. The attempt has been to view these sources in light of their contexts with comment from secondary sources. It refl ects upon preaching issues and practices of today as they grow out of the research. The fi ndings are of a rich heritage of women preachers within the Christian tradition. To date, the church has neglected this aspect of its history. To the extent that the church includes women in the foundation of the teaching and preaching ministries, the stronger and more balanced the structure of the church will be. Clergy and laywomen particularly benefi t from an inclusive church in that their own rootedness in the faith is strengthened by knowledge of these foremothers. The whole church will benefi t from this knowledge as it will begin to see itself as growing in wholeness as refl ected in creation (Gen. 1:27). The information contained in this book is suitable for studies in the local church. It is also useful for preaching, as it enlarges the churchs concept of women in the scripture.
