Pentecostalism Catholicism and the Spirit in the World

This volume’s essays are an ecumenical ensemble of the best scholars and leading practitioners in the Pentecostal and Charismatic movements from all four corners of the world. The contributors bring together various denominational perspectives and dialogue for understanding the present momentum of these Spirit movements in the world church. Their diverse methodologies transverse the traditional and new approaches to studying these movements. Pointing the way forward, the authors highlight some of the lessons learned in their scholarly engagement with Spirit movements. These lessons offer significant insight and viewpoints for the academy in the historical analysis of these movements. They also serve as a good guide for pastoral discernment and accompaniment for God’s people in their daily lives, as well as for social ministries in the world church. This volume addresses questions of salvation and eschatology, health and healing, prosperity and poverty, suffering and death, fear and faith, despair and hope. Other topics include the conflict between charism and institution and the tension between cultic clericalism and the affirmation and use of the gifts and talents of lay members of Christ’s faithful in the church.

The Holy Spirit in the World

The meaning of the Holy Spirit and discernment of its presence in the world have always generated lively debate. But with the emergence of theologies from diverse cultural contexts, particularly in Asia, the age-old debate has assumed a broader character. From her own experience of diverse ecclesial and cultural contexts, Kirsteen Kim is well-equipped to enter into many facets of this conversation. In this wise and exciting book, she shows how perspectives formed by gender, access to power, theology, social location, and culture offer new and rich insights into ancient questions. Highlighting both the vitality and tensions that characterize the present moment, she offers a fresh perspective on the way in which all God's people are moving under the Spirit's power to new wisdom, insights, and power.

At the same time, recent decades have seen a huge increase in interest in the work of the Spirit in the church, and many would say, a fresh outpouring of the Spirit. 'The Spirit in the World Today' conference in London in 2010 brought together some of the world's most distinguished theologians to think about the person, the role and the work of the Holy Spirit in the church and the world today. This book is a collection of the papers given at the conference, and will be a stimulus to Pneumatology in coming years.

Matter and Spirit in the Universe

Cosmology is an unusual science with an unusual history. This book examines the formative years of modern cosmology from the perspective of its interaction with religious thought. As the first study of its kind, it reveals how closely associated the development of cosmology has been with considerations of a philosophical and religious nature. From nineteenth-century thermodynamics to the pioneering cosmological works of Georges LemaŒtre and Arthur E Milne, religion has shaped parts of modern cosmological theory. By taking the religious component seriously, a new and richer history of cosmology emerges.

The Holy Spirit in the Life of Jesus

In the New Testament, Jesus reassures the Apostles before he ascends to heaven by saying, ?You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses ... to the ends of the earth.? What of this Spirit? In what way was that Spirit manifested in Jesus' ministry on earth? What does it offer us? And ask of us? These reflections by the preacher to the papal household coalesce biblical and doctrinal thought on the gifts conferred by anointing in the Spirit?kingly, prophetic, and priestly?onto Christ and through Christ to the Church. As one well accustomed to illuminating the Word to his audience, Father Cantalamessa bestows on readers an understanding of the Holy Spirit that is both practical and profound.?This slim volume contains rich meditations on the meaning and role of the Spirit as portrayed in the New Testament, particularly the Gospels.?
