Combining the public choice literature on political decision making with the Neo-Schumpeterian literature on innovation, this valuable new book develops a conceptual model of how environmental regulation is designed. The author presents a novel perspective on the Porter Hypothesis, arguing that the effect of environmental regulation is too weak to induce technological change. This implies that environmental policy intervention has little, if any, economic consequences which has significant repercussions for environmental decision-making. Since radical technological advance is unpredictable, this implies that environmental regulation induces, at the very most, incremental improvements of existing designs. Moreover, due to the high political costs of disrupting existing industry structures, regulation objectives are often adjusted or the compliance costs reduced through subsidies. Due to this limited inducement effect, the author finds that environmental regulation does not produce outcomes consistent with the Porter Hypothesis, nor does it have any palpable negative economic impact. Using detailed case-study evidence, each step of his argument is skilfully illustrated. The book conc.

Despite being born with cerebral palsy, Bill Porter grew up to take the physically demanding job of a door to door salesman in the worst neighborhood in Portland, Oregon, earning no pay, only commissions. Eventually he became the companys top salesman in the city, the region, and finally the country. Along the way he learned powerful life lessons that he imparted to those around him. One of those people was Shelly Brady, first hired by Porter as a typist and driver, later to become his great friend. In this inspiring book, she brings together his lessons. These seemingly simple ideas, such as Mothers Know Best, Persistence Pays Off, and Know Your Limits, but Reach Beyond Them, resonate powerfully when seen through the lens of a life lived to the fullest against what would be impossible odds for many. Whether finding cooperative bellmen to button his cuffs or beaming a video to his speaking engagements because of ill health, Porter, whose life story became a cause celebre in the 1990s, gets the job done with a smile, and inspires readers to do the same.

For the past two decades, Michael Porter's work has towered over the field of competitive strategy. On Competition, Updated and Expanded Edition brings together more than a dozen of Porter's landmark articles from the Harvard Business Review. Five are new to this edition, including the 2008 update to his classic "The Five Competitive Forces That Shape Strategy," as well as new work on health care, philanthropy, corporate social responsibility, and CEO leadership. This collection captures Porter's unique ability to bridge theory and practice. Each of the articles has not only shaped thinking, but also redefined the work of practitioners in its respective field. In an insightful new introduction, Porter relates each article to the whole of his thinking about competition and value creation, and traces how that thinking has deepened over time. This collection is organized by topic, allowing the reader easy access to the wide range of Porter's work. Parts I and II present the frameworks for which Porter is best known--frameworks that address how companies, as well as nations and regions, gain and sustain competitive advantage. Part III shows how strategic thinking can address society's most pressing challenges, from environmental sustainability to improving health-care delivery. Part IV explores how both nonprofits and corporations can create value for society more effectively by applying strategy principles to philanthropy. Part V explores the link between strategy and leadership.

Katherine Anne Porter's Poetry makes available for the first time the complete poetic canon of one of America's most-celebrated writers. Widely known and revered for her award-winning short stories, Porter published just thirty-two poems and poetry translations during her lifetime, although she composed - and subsequently destroyed - hundreds. Her poetry is virtually unknown even by her most devoted followers. From fragmentary notes and letters found among Porter's papers, Darlene Harbour Unrue has recovered and edited eighteen unpublished poems. In a significant addition to the Porter canon, these newly found poems join Porter's published verse - including the entire text of the now-rare Katherine Anne Porter's French Song-Book - to create a unique commentary on the writer's life and work. Interspersed with photographs of Porter from the years and places in which she composed the poems, the volume features a substantial critical and biographical essay in which Unrue explains the significance of individual poems and details the relationship between Porter's poetry and fiction. Unrue describes Porter's verse as an index to the stages of her developing intellectual thought and, in some cases, an intermediate phase in a creative process that began with random notes and letters and culminated in fiction.
