On most campuses the course in physical chemistry has a reputation for difficulty. It is not, nor should it be, the easiest course available; but to keep the matter in perspective it must be said that the IQ of a genius is not necessary for understanding the subject. The greatest stumbling block that can be erected in the path of learning physical chemistry is the notion that memorizing equations is a sensible way to proceed. Memory should be reserved for the fundamentals and important definitions. Equations are meant to be understood, not to be memorized. In physics and chemistry an equation is not a jumbled mass of symbols, but is a statement of a relation between physical quantities. As you study keep a pencil and scratch paper handy. Play with the final equation from a derivation. If it expresses pressure as a function of temperature, turn it around and express the temperature as a function of pressure. Sketch the functions so that you can "see" the variation. How does the sketch look if one of the parameters is changed? Read physical meaning into the various terms and the algebraic signs which appear in the equation. If a simplifying assumption has been made in the derivation, go back and see what would happen if that assumption were omitted. Apply the derivation to a different special case. Invent problems of your own involving this equation and solve them. Juggle the equation back and forth until you understand its meaning. In the first parts of the book much space is devoted to the meaning of equations; I hope that I have not been too long-winded about it, but it is important to be able to interpret the mathematical statement in terms of its physical content. By all means try to keep a good grasp on the fundamental principles that are being applied; memorize them and above all understand them. Take the time to understand the methods that are used to attack a problem. In Appendix I there is a brief recapitulation of some of the most important mathematical ideas and methods that are used. If any of these things are unfamiliar to you, take the time to review them in a mathematics text. Once the relations between variables have been established, the algebra and calculus are simply mechanical devices, but they should be respected as precision tools. If problems baffle you, learn the technique of problem solving. The principles contained in G. Polya's book, How to Solve It, have helped many of my students.* It is available as a paperback and is well worth studying. Work as many problems as possible. Numerical answers to all problems can be found in Appendix VII. Make up your own problems as often as possible. Watching your teacher perform will not make you into an actor; problem solving will. To aid in this, get a good "scientific" calculator (the serious student will want a programmable one with continuous memory) and learn how to use it to the limit of its capability. Reading the instructions will save you hundreds of hours! Finally, don't be put off by the reputation for difficulty. Many students have enjoyed learning physical chemistry. * G . Polya, How to Solve It. Anchor Book No. 93. New York: Doubleday & Co . , 1 957.

Mathematics for Physical Chemistry, Third Edition, is the ideal text for students and physical chemists who want to sharpen their mathematics skills. It can help prepare the reader for an undergraduate course, serve as a supplementary text for use during a course, or serve as a reference for graduate students and practicing chemists. The text concentrates on applications instead of theory, and, although the emphasis is on physical chemistry, it can also be useful in general chemistry courses. The Third Edition includes new exercises in each chapter that provide practice in a technique immediately after discussion or example and encourage self-study. The first ten chapters are constructed around a sequence of mathematical topics, with a gradual progression into more advanced material. The final chapter discusses mathematical topics needed in the analysis of experimental data. * Numerous examples and problems interspersed throughout the presentations * Each extensive chapter contains a preview, objectives, and summary * Includes topics not found in similar books, such as a review of general algebra and an introduction to group theory * Provides chemistry specific instruction without the distraction of abstract concepts or theoretical issues in pure mathematics

Chang's newest text is intended for use in a one-semester introductory course in physical chemistry for students of the biosciences. The author emphasizes the understanding of physical concepts rather than focussing on precise mathematical development or on actual experimental details. Only basic skills of differential and integral calculus are required to understand the equations. The extensive array of end of chapter problems have both physicochemical and biological applications, and a detailed Solutions Manual is available.

By the time chemistry students are ready to study physical chemistry, they’ve completed mathematics courses through calculus. But a strong background in mathematics doesn’t necessarily equate to knowledge of how to apply that mathematics to solving physicochemical problems. In addition, in-depth understanding of modern concepts in physical chemistry requires knowledge of mathematical concepts and techniques beyond introductory calculus, such as differential equations, Fourier series, and Fourier transforms. This results in many physical chemistry instructors spending valuable lecture time teaching mathematics rather than chemistry. Barrante presents both basic and advanced mathematical techniques in the context of how they apply to physical chemistry. Many problems at the end of each chapter test students’ mathematical knowledge. Designed and priced to accompany traditional core textbooks in physical chemistry, Applied Mathematics for Physical Chemistry provides students with the tools essential for answering questions in thermodynamics, atomic/molecular structure, spectroscopy, and statistical mechanics.

In recent years, the area dealing with the physical chemistry of materials has become an emerging discipline in materials science that emphasizes the study of materials for chemical, sustainable energy, and pollution abatement applications. Written by an active researcher in this field, Physical Chemistry of Materials: Energy and Environmental Applications presents methods for synthesizing and characterizing adsorbents, ion exchangers, ionic conductors, heterogeneous catalysts, and permeable porous and dense materials. It also discusses their properties and applications. The book explores various examples of these important materials, including perovskites, zeolites, mesoporous molecular sieves, silica, alumina, active carbons, carbon nanotubes, titanium dioxide, magnesium oxide, clays, pillared clays, hydrotalcites, alkali metal titanates, titanium silicates, polymers, and coordination polymers. It shows how the materials are used in adsorption, ion conduction, ion exchange, gas separation, membrane reactors, catalysts, catalysts supports, sensors, pollution abatement, detergency, animal nourishment, agriculture, and sustainable energy applications. Rising pollution levels and the need for sustainable energy have necessitated new ways of using certain materials to combat these problems. Focusing on this emerging discipline, Physical Chemistry of Materials describes the methods of syntheses and characterization of adsorbents, ion exchangers, ionic conductors, catalysts, and permeable materials. It tackles key issues in materials science and physical chemistry.

The third edition of Van Kampen's standard work has been revised and updated. The main difference with the second edition is that the contrived application of the quantum master equation in section 6 of chapter XVII has been replaced with a satisfactory treatment of quantum fluctuations. Apart from that throughout the text corrections have been made and a number of references to later developments have been included. From the recent textbooks the following are the most relevant. C.W.Gardiner, Quantum Optics (Springer, Berlin 1991) D.T. Gillespie, Markov Processes (Academic Press, San Diego 1992) W.T. Coffey, Yu.P.Kalmykov, and J.T.Waldron, The Langevin Equation (2nd edition, World Scientific, 2004) * Comprehensive coverage of fluctuations and stochastic methods for describing them * A must for students and researchers in applied mathematics, physics and physical chemistry
