Ruidoso, Spanish for noisy river, is the name given to the burbling stream tumbling out of the White Mountains in New Mexico. These mountains and much of the plains to the east were inhabited by natives known as the Mescalero who have tribal ties to the Apache. It was alongside this busy stream that Paul Dowlin, an ancestor of Irish immigrants who migrated to the United States even before the Revolutionary war, found his destiny. He was born and lived in eastern Pennsylvania for over 30 years. His yearning for adventure and advancement led him to make his way across the country in 1859. Soon after his arrival in New Mexico Territory he joined the newly formed New Mexico Volunteers to resist the invasion by the Confederate forces and supporters. The fighting in the Civil War in New Mexico was brief; but the battles against the native tribes took much longer. Dowlin served directly under the command of Kit Carson, the commander of the New Mexico Volunteer Army in the Civil War battles and the major campaigns against the Mescalero, Navajo and other tribes. After separation from the army Dowlin was able to acquire land and build a thriving settlement in what became Lincoln County, New Mexico. At one time he was one of the largest tax payers in the county and one of the political leaders of the county and the state. He was always cordial to all people including the Mescalero, the Mexican descendants in the area, and the late coming Americans. The question is: Why was he shot and killed in 1877? He was unarmed and knew his killer. Ken Dowlin, a descendent of Captain Paul Dowlin has woven facts derived from 4 years of research in libraries, museums, archives, and site visits into family stories that were passed down from generation to generation. His education, career, and lifelong learning has provided him with the necessary skills to produce a historical novel based on facts and family stories.

Their BAE Jetstream was now coming in to land at Mfuwe’s airport. “Mfuwe International”, Brian soon learnt, wasn’t very international, or very large or indeed very smart, but it was still the all-important gateway to the South Luangwa National Park. And that’s why he and Sandra had come here. They were embarking on a three-week safari holiday in Zambia, where for the first two weeks they would be making their way around this national park. Marmite, Bites and Noisy Nights (in Zambia) is another day-by-day account of an expedition made by Brian and his wife, Sandra, this time around the South Luangwa and Lower Zambezi national parks – in, unsurprisingly, Zambia. However, it is also an example of how the travel-book genre can be harnessed for the purpose of humour, and of how Brian tends to regard his travels as an opportunity not only to study the wonders of the natural world but also to vent his opinions – whether these are on what he observes around him or on anything else that comes to mind. This book describes the wildlife that Brian encounters, together with the people and the perils he encounters, but it also catalogues a number of his valuable ‘insights’. There are expositions on the de-evolution of mankind, the likely demise of mankind as a result of the resilience of pathogenic biological agents, the advantages of setting up a new, online religion – and the desirability of the rapid evolution of both universal knee joints and inflatable boobs. This is the final book in David’s seven-part series that details Brian and Sandra’s travels to Assam, Syria, Borneo, Cape Verde, Namibia/Botswana, Morocco and Zambia. But it is unlikely to be his last!

Six years ago, Polly Birdswell—drinking and deeply unhappy—made a decision that changed her life forever. Believing she could spare her young daughter a legacy of self-destruction, she left her husband and child and moved north to a coastal town in Maine. There, close to Bride Island, the beloved family retreat she considers her true home, she set about getting sober and remaking her life. Now Polly desperately wants seven-year-old Monroe back and is determined to prove—to herself especially—she’s a stable and loving mother. At the same time, a sudden decision to sell Bride Island unleashes a wave of family greed that endangers the island’s future. As Polly and her siblings try to claim ownership of what they love, they discover some things can never truly be owned, and Polly must again ask herself what she’s willing to relinquish. Beautifully written and emotionally complex, Bride Island is a poignant debut novel about love, motherhood, and the haunting and sometimes conflicting pulls of family and the places that shape us.
