In this dialogue between a famous atheist and a former radical, Sam Harris and Maajid Nawaz invite you to join an urgently needed conversation: Is Islam a religion of peace or war? Is it amenable to reform? Why do so many Muslims seem drawn to extremism? The authors demonstrate how two people with very different views can find common ground.

‘Mountains of Ignorance' is a critical exploration of the published dialogue between Sam Harris and Maajid Nawaz entitled: 'Islam and the Future of Tolerance'. Dr. Harris claims that he is interested in peace, harmony, co-operation, and tolerance. Yet, when it comes to Islam and Muslims, he does not appear to exhibit the same commitment to, or fervor for, the aforementioned ideals. More specifically, Dr. Harris seems to be willing to recklessly endanger innocent lives – both Muslim and non-Muslims – by fraudulently promoting a false idea about the nature of Islam, and this seems rather incongruous with some of his stated values. One can’t help but wonder what his underlying motives actually are because there seems to be little rhyme or reason to his insistence on maintaining such a jaundiced and factually challenged view of Islam unless his purpose is something other than peace, harmony, co-operation, tolerance, and the like. The fact that Dr. Harris appears to be willing to identify fundamentalists, extremists, and militants as constituting the only “true” Muslims, while referring to other non-violent Muslims as acting out of disingenuous and hypocritical pretense (simply because the latter individuals refuse to accept the delusional and ignorant ranting of fundamentalists) also causes one to wonder what the actual underlying motives of Dr. Harris are. Dr. Harris and Maajid Nawaz present themselves as individuals who have understanding of, and insight into, the nature of Islam. But they do not possess such understanding or insight, and the present book: Mountains of Ignorance' documents the foregoing contention.

Religion as a powerful impulse in human existence plays a paradoxical role in society as it both contributes significantly in shaping the spiritual, socio-political and economic lives of millions of people and also acts as a source of conflict. The sad experience of interreligious conflict in Northern Nigeria challenges the claim of Islam and Christianity to be religions of peace. However, understood as closely intertwined with culture and custom of a people, religion can be central in the establishment of peace and conflict resolution in and between communities. This text using the model of dialogue (Nostra Aetate) explores and presents the socio-political and theological resources available in Northern Nigeria (the locality) for a consistent peace building process.

In this book, the author presents an essay by Prof. Abdulhamid al-Ansari from Qatar to English readers. The essay concerns the interesting topic of Women and Politics, one of the most controversial issues in Islam. The opinions on female involvement in politics differ a lot within the Muslim community: they vary from the total exclusion of women from politics to their partial or even total involvement and participation. The author is convinced that the three different views on the participation of women in politics and society described by Prof. al-Ansari provide a very useful categorisation, which can help to promote dialogue and tolerance within Islam. In this context, Dr. Rampoldi refers to the symbol evocated by Antoine de Saint-Exupery when he says: « Quand tu veux construire un bateau, ne commence pas par rassembler du bois, couper des planches et distribuer du travail, mais réveille au sein des FEMMES le désir de la mer grande et large ». If we transcribe Saint-Exupery’s aphorism to feminism, we see how important it is to motivate women to participate in Islamic politics and society today. Regarding the need for diversity in Islamic politics and society, according to Quran 5:48, the author states: “Thus, Islam is a religion that fundamentally affirms diversity, and the colourfulness of the world on this earth where the best man and the best woman is the one who has the best moral values, and who uses these values to build a better, more beautiful world.”

In some 31 short chapters (182 pages) the author attempts to show why there is such intolerance of Christianity in almost every majority Muslim country in the Islamic world. There is no such persecution of Islam in the West which lives under Judeo-Christian values with respect and tolerance for Islam. The contrasts is startling. Why is this so? Even in the West through acts of terrorism and other forms of stealth jihad, there is a whole movement to convert the West to Islam if not by violent jihad (holy war) then by stealth jihad (a slow integration of sharia (Muslim holy law) into the West under guise of religious freedom offered in the West. This conflict is global in nature, violent in Muslim countries, non violent in the West. This conflict seems to be a one way street with Muslims attacking Christians while Christians seem to offer little or no resistance. This must change if there is to be true peace in this world. But first there must be a realization of this war on Christians by Islam and why this is so. This book attempts to do just that.

Modern interpreters have variously cast the Middle Ages as a benighted past from which the West had to evolve and, more recently, as the model for a potential future of intercultural dialogue and tolerance. The Legend of the Middle Ages cuts through such oversimplifications to reconstruct a complicated and philosophically rich period that remains deeply relevant to the contemporary world. Featuring a penetrating interview and sixteen essays only three of which have previously appeared in English this volume explores key intersections of medieval religion and philosophy. With characteristic erudition and insight, Remi Brague focuses less on individual Christian, Jewish, and Muslim thinkers than on their relationships with one another. Their disparate philosophical worlds, Brague shows, were grounded in different models of revelation that engendered divergent interpretations of the ancient Greek sources they held in common. So, despite striking similarities in their solutions for the philosophical problems they all faced, intellectuals in each theological tradition often viewed the others ideas with skepticism, if not disdain.
