“I worked in a trailer that ICE had set aside for conversations between the women and the attorneys. While we talked, their children, most of whom seemed to be between three and eight years old, played with a few toys on the floor. It was hard for me to get my head around the idea of a jail full of toddlers, but there they were.” For decades, advocates for refugee children and families have fought to end the U.S. government’s practice of jailing children and families for months, or even years, until overburdened immigration courts could rule on their claims for asylum. Baby Jails is the history of that legal and political struggle. Philip G. Schrag, the director of Georgetown University’s asylum law clinic, takes readers through thirty years of conflict over which refugee advocates resisted the detention of migrant children. The saga began during the Reagan administration when 15-year-old Jenny Lisette Flores languished in a Los Angeles motel that the government had turned into a makeshift jail by draining the swimming pool, barring the windows, and surrounding the building with barbed wire. What became known as the Flores Settlement Agreement was still at issue years later, when the Trump administration resorted to the forced separation of families after the courts would not allow long-term jailing of the children. Schrag provides recommendations for the reform of a system that has brought anguish and trauma to thousands of parents and children. Provocative and timely, Baby Jails exposes the ongoing struggle between the U.S. government and immigrant advocates over the duration and conditions of confinement of children who seek safety in America.

You must be Kidding Dr. Supratic Gupta! Want to change the world? Want to make people think sincerely? Why not? We all want a better world for our children, In pursuit of Happiness and Success. The lopsided and inequitable development of Indian society has prodded an IIT faculty to initiate a journey of explorations and observations, through the maze of complex socio-cultural and systemic issues. It led to some new innovative concepts, touching the roots of complex human problems. The new approach was based upon his life experiences, including 12 years exposure to far eastern society. The problem lies in the rigid and outdated structures, systems, attitudes, research and educational systems. The suffering of children pursuing sports, music and dance in formal education system, and their post retirement life, led to the realization that children choosing sports, music and dance should have a complete separate curriculum of communication, science and mathematics, which will make a person complete entertainer and balanced personality. The authors have proposed to give more importance to flexibility exercise in childhood, counselling of adolescent and youth, a holistic child care system, and more scientific way of thinking. A series of portals controlled by public participation and involvement to assist the sports and research in India is also proposed.

Haiti has gained it’s independence in the year 1804, more than two hundred years ago. It is a nation established through a successful slave revolt. Time and time again, Haiti’s resilience is tested by earthquakes, hurricanes, incompetent leaders, mass migration, among other things, but Haiti endures. Haiti stays strong. The country has a poignant history, rich culture, and Haiti deserves a bright future. But something has happened to this very promising country in the Carribean. Tagged as the “poorest” country in the western hemisphere, Haiti struggles to break free from living in the shadow of their great past. Moving Forward: A Nation in Search of Itself gives you a firsthand account of Haiti’s state of affairs. The book offers educated and comprehensive propositions on how to improve the welfare of Haiti and the well-being of its people. Claude Pierre makes it clear that Haiti has the resources to make Haiti one of the most powerful countries in the world. What the country lacks is the right mind-set. In the present scenario, stresses induced due to global environmental change have indeed become a focal point of researches and study programmes worldwide. Stress caused to plant life has an important consequence to both, vegetation as such and all other global cycles which sustain this `living earth'. Unlike other already existing works this volume elucidates the plant-pollutant relationship in a manner that defines not only the drastic effects of pollutants on plants but concomitantly highlights the hitherto less focused areas namely phytoindication, phytoremediation and stress tolerant bioaesthetic development, thus concentrating more on plant than pollutant. The book would help understand the magnitude of environmental stress in the coming years and may play a formative role in defining future research and policy areas along with providing impetus to development of newer eco-technologies. The book shall interest both students and researchers of environmental sciences, ecology, forestry and related disciplines as well as persons and organisations engaged in environmental management and eco-conservation.
