Contemporary environmental activists and the animal-rights community are more often than not considered separate movements, despite similar goals and attitudes toward desired change in the world. A fundamental distinction is seen in the environmentalist's broad focus on an entire species, whereas animal rights activists tend to think more about the behavior of select groups of people. Thus far, uniting these two movements has proven difficult, despite their sharing of many of the same ideological sentiments. In Eating Earth, Lisa Kemmerer reveals a potential place of common ground for the environmental and animal-rights movements: human dietary choice. The book links environmentalism with animal-rights thinkers, by exploring the many ways that mass consumption of animal products by people is harmful to the environment. The book argues that rather than choosing to pursue separate agendas, a joint promotion of vegetarianism and veganism could lead to targeted results for bothgroups. Kemmerer discusses the harmful toll that the hunting and fishing industries take on ecosystems, and addresses how modern agriculture's treatment of animals is both unethical and environmentally unsustainable. Chapter topics also include movements and ideas like ecofeminism and human-population control, and their intersections with environmentalism. A brief but poignant examination of what human beings consume, Eating Earth shows that the issue of dietary choice deserves to be considered in a new environmental light.

• Winner of the BC National Award for Non-Fiction • Nominated for the Charles Taylor Prize for Literary Non-Fiction and the 2011 Hilary Weston Writer's Trust Award. During Charlotte Gill’s 20 years working as a tree planter she encountered hundreds of clear-cuts, each one a collision site between human civilization and the natural world, a complicated landscape presenting geographic evidence of our appetites. Charged with sowing the new forest in these clear-cuts, tree planters are a tribe caught between the stumps and the virgin timber, between environmentalists and loggers. In Eating Dirt, Gill offers up a slice of tree-planting life in all of its soggy, gritty exuberance while questioning the ability of conifer plantations to replace original forests, which evolved over millennia into intricate, complex ecosystems. Among other topics, she also touches on the boom-and-bust history of logging and the versatility of wood, from which we have devised countless creations as diverse as textiles and airplane parts. She also eloquently evokes the wonder of trees, our slowest-growing “renewable” resource and joyously celebrates the priceless value of forests and the ancient, ever-changing relationship between humans and trees.

A deeply human-centered perspective on the origins of America's food Where Am I Eating? bridges the gap between global food producers and the American consumer, providing an insightful look at how our eating habits affect farmers and fishermen around the world. Follow the author on his global quest to meet the workers that nurture, harvest, and hunt our food, as he works alongside them—loading lobster diving boats in Nicaragua, harvesting bananas in Costa Rica, lugging cocoa beans in Ivory Coast with a modern-day slave, picking coffee beans in Colombia and hauling tomatoes in Indiana. This new edition includes a study guide, a deeper explanation of the "glocal" concept, and advice for students looking to become engaged as both local and global citizens. Arguing neither for nor against globalization, this book simply explores the lives of those who feed us. Imports account for eighty-six percent of America's seafood, fifty percent of its fresh fruit, and eighteen percent of its fresh vegetables. Where Am I Eating? examines the effects of this reliance on those who supply the global food economy. Learn more about the global producers that feed our nation, and learn from their worldviews intensely connected to people and planet Discover how food preferences and trends affect the lives of farmers and fishermen Catch a boots-on-the-ground glimpse of the daily lives of food producers on four continents Meet a modern-day slave and explore the blurred line between exploitation and opportunity Observe how the poorest producers fare in the global food economy This book takes a human-centered approach to food, investigating the lives of the people at the other end of the global food economy, observing the hope and opportunity—or lack thereof—that results from our reliance on imports. Where Am I Eating? is a touching, insightful, informative look at the origins of our food.

U.S. food production is a $900 billion industry, and each day farming and meat production destroy native habitats; pesticides contaminate groundwater, rivers, and lakes; food processing and delivery contribute to ozone depletion; and food packaging overburdens landfills. Changing the way we eat can we improve the overall health of the planet, and in EATING TO SAVE THE EARTH, Linda Riebel and Ken Jacobsen prove that we can make a difference one meal at a time. In this focused blueprint for action, Riebel and Jacobsen discuss the environmental consequences of meat and fish consumption, the merits of sustainable agriculture and organic foods, and simple methods to reduce waste, conserve water and energy, compost, and recycle. Whether you at home or at work, in restaurants or while camping, every menu choice you make has the potential to create a healthier body, a safer environment, and a balanced ecosystem.
