From the former secretary of defense, a strikingly candid, vivid account of serving Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. When Robert M. Gates received a call from the White House, he thought he’d long left Washington politics behind: After working for six presidents in both the CIA and the National Security Council, he was happily serving as president of Texas A&M University. But when he was asked to help a nation mired in two wars and to aid the troops doing the fighting, he answered what he felt was the call of duty.

This is an InstaRead Summary of Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War by Robert Gates. Below is a preview of the earlier sections of the summary. Chapter 1: Summoned to Duty Robert Gates was president of Texas A&M University from August 2002 until December 2006. Gates originally planned to remain at the university for only five years, but agreed to extend his stay to seven years, until 2009. However, those plans changed when, in October 2006, he was contacted by Steve Hadley, President Bush's national security adviser. Hadley wanted to know if Gates would be open to replacing Donald Rumsfeld as the Secretary of Defense. Gates, owing to a sense of duty to the troops fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan, said yes. A short time later, Gates had a clandestine interview with George W. Bush. This was the first meeting between the two men even though Gates had served first as Deputy National Security Adviser and then as the Director of Central Intelligence under Bush's father, George H. W. Bush. The meeting went well with both men expressing their concerns about the dual wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. That same day, Gates learned that George W. Bush intended to go forward with plans to make Gates Secretary of Defense. On November 8, 2006, Gates flew to Washington, D.C. where he took part in a press conference announcing the President's decision to name him the new Secretary of State. Gates then started the process of being confirmed by Congress, which included filling out countless forms and questionnaires. Gates also spent time visiting key senators, learning how unhappy Congress had become in regards to the President and his policies in Iraq and Afghanistan. On December 5, 2006, Gates attended his confirmation hearing. It was a pinnacle moment in his life as he thought about his humble beginnings in Kansas, the son of an opinionated Republican and a quiet spoken Democrat. Gates answered all the questions he was asked openly and honestly, almost getting himself into hot water by answering one question too honestly: When asked if we were winning in Iraq, Gates simply answered 'no'. The following afternoon, on December 6, 2006, Robert Gates was confirmed as the secretary of defense with a vote of 95 to 2, with three senators abstaining. After being confirmed, Gates chose to take twelve days to complete his obligations at Texas A&M. Gates wanted to preside over the December commencement ceremonies. It was a difficult time because he deeply enjoyed his time at Texas A&M and was sad to see it come to an end. As Gates began his role as secretary of defense, he found himself overwhelmed with people wanting to see him or send him briefs. Gates turned to several friends for advice, including Collin Powell, former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Written by a former director of the CIA, this is the story of America's and the agency's role in the collapse of communism in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. As the only person to rise from entry-level analyst to Director of the CIA and to serve on the White House staffs of four Presidents, Robert Gates is uniquely qualified to tell the unprecedented inside story of the Cold War. Drawing on his access to classified information and top-level involvement in policy decisions, Gates lays bare the hidden wars and operations the United States waged against communism worldwide. Ever certain that the fifty-year struggle with the Soviet Union was indeed a war, Gates makes candid appraisals of Presidents, key officials, and policies of the period. Among his disclosures are: how Carter laid the foundations for Reagan's covert wars against the Soviets; CIA predictions of a conservative coup against Gorbachev and the collapse of the Soviet Union; CIA and KGB "black operations" against each other; the secret relationship between Pope John Paul II and the Soviets; and three secret CIA-KGB summits. From the Shadows is a classic memoir on the career of a CIA officer at the center of power during a time when the threat of global annihilation informed America's every move.

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER From the diplomat Putin wants to interrogate—and has banned from Russia—a revelatory, inside account of U.S.-Russia relations from 1989 to the present “A fascinating and timely account of the current crisis in the relationship between Russia and the United States.” —New York Times Book Review Putin would need an enemy, and he turned to the most reliable one in Russia’s recent history: the United States and then, by extension, me. In 2008, when Michael McFaul was asked to leave his perch at Stanford and join an unlikely presidential campaign, he had no idea that he would find himself at the beating heart of one of today’s most contentious and consequential international relationships. As President Barack Obama’s adviser on Russian affairs, McFaul helped craft the United States’ policy known as “reset” that fostered new and unprecedented collaboration between the two countries. And then, as U.S. ambassador to Russia from 2012 to 2014, he had a front-row seat when this fleeting, hopeful moment crumbled with Vladimir Putin’s return to the presidency. This riveting inside account combines history and memoir to tell the full story of U.S.-Russia relations from the fall of the Soviet Union to the new rise of the hostile, paranoid Russian president. From the first days of McFaul’s ambassadorship, the Kremlin actively sought to discredit and undermine him, hassling him with tactics that included dispatching protesters to his front gates, slandering him on state media, and tightly surveilling him, his staff, and his family. From Cold War to Hot Peace is an essential account of the most consequential global confrontation of our time.

In its earliest days, the American-led war in Afghanistan appeared to be a triumph - a ‘good war’ in comparison to the debacle in Iraq. It has since turned into one of the longest and most expensive wars in recent history. The story of how this good war went so bad may well turn out to be a defining tragedy of the twenty-first century - yet, as acclaimed war correspondent Jack Fairweather explains, it should also give us reason to hope for an outcome grounded in Afghan reality. In The Good War, Fairweather provides the first full narrative history of the war in Afghanistan, from the 2001 invasion to the 2014 withdrawal. Drawing on hundreds of interviews, previously unpublished archives, and months of experience living and reporting in Afghanistan, Fairweather traces the course of the conflict from its inception after 9/11 to the drawdown in 2014. In the process, he explores the righteous intentions and astounding hubris that caused the West’s strategy in Afghanistan to flounder, refuting the long-held notion that the war could have been won with more troops and cash. Fairweather argues that only by accepting the limitations in Afghanistan - from the presence of the Taliban to the ubiquity of poppy production to the country’s inherent unsuitability for rapid, Western-style development - can we help to restore peace in this shattered land. A timely lesson in the perils of nation-building and a sobering reminder of the limits of military power, The Good War leads readers from the White House Situation Room to Afghan military outposts, from warlords’ palaces to insurgents’ dens, to explain how the US and its British allies might have salvaged the Afghan campaign - and how we must rethink other ‘good’ wars in the future.
