A Collection of Stories about Fish, Fishermen, and Favorite Fishing Spots with Action on Every Page The incomparable Philip Wylie is here writing about one of the things he likes best—fishing. Anyone who has ever wet a line, and perhaps those few benighted souls who haven’t, will be thrilled to read these true tales about the big ones, hooked (and sometimes lost) in tropic waters. In Denizens of the Deep, which was originally published in 1947, there are wonderful chapters on marlin, the “admirable” barracuda, and the shark, whom Wylie calls “that misunderstood fish.” The bursting pride when you catch that first big one is recaptured with fine nostalgia in the essay “What Makes a Great Day’s Fishing?” and the tragedy of the clean getaway in “Listen to This Tale of Woe.” Serious fishermen with an interest in the pastime’s history will also find much valuable information in the chapter on the International Game Fish Association. Skyhorse Publishing is proud to publish a broad range of books for fishermen. Our books for anglers include titles that focus on fly fishing, bait fishing, fly-casting, spin casting, deep sea fishing, and surf fishing. Our books offer both practical advice on tackle, techniques, knots, and more, as well as lyrical prose on fishing for bass, trout, salmon, crappie, baitfish, catfish, and more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to publishing books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked by other publishers and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Denizens of the Deep (www.dofthed.org) is a multi-media environmental communications campaign that aims to raise awareness of and concern for migratory fish in the Hudson River Estuary and its tributary streams. This campaign utilizes a combination of media-based and in-person initiatives to engage audiences in storytelling about creatures that live beneath the surface. Many migratory fish species are in decline and causes of population reductions include riparian and in-stream habitat modifications, and the presence of barriers to movement, such as dams and misaligned culverts. Dam removal and promotion of “aquatic connectivity” is becoming more common across the United States and in many locations, migratory fish populations have increased in response to the removal of barriers. Raising awareness of migratory fish amongst diverse audiences is a potential pathway to build support for dam removal and river restoration efforts. The Denizens of the Deep communications campaign blends podcasts, written feature stories, digital outreach and interpersonal interaction, with the aim of raising awareness and inspiring action. Evaluation of efficacy will be conducted through analysis of website traffic, social media shares, podcast subscriptions and audiences’ response to calls to action, such as leaving an iTunes review, recording a fish story and volunteering for fish conservation efforts.

This book sets forth a set of truly controversial and astonishing theories: First, it proposes that below the surface of the earth is a biosphere of greater mass and volume than the biosphere the total sum of living things on our planet's continents and in its oceans. Second, it proposes that the inhabitants of this subterranean biosphere are not plants or animals as we know them, but heat-loving bacteria that survive on a diet consisting solely of hydrocarbons that is, natural gas and petroleum. And third and perhaps most heretically, the book advances the stunning idea that most hydrocarbons on Earth are not the byproduct of biological debris ("fossil fuels"), but were a common constituent of the materials from which the earth itself was formed some 4.5 billion years ago. The implications are astounding. The theory proposes answers to often-asked questions: Is the deep hot biosphere where life originated, and do Mars and other seemingly barren planets contain deep biospheres? Even more provocatively, is it possible that there is an enormous store of hydrocarbons upwelling from deep within the earth that can provide us with abundant supplies of gas and petroleum? However far-fetched these ideas seem, they are supported by a growing body of evidence, and by the indisputable stature and seriousness Gold brings to any scientific debate. In this book we see a brilliant and boldly original thinker, increasingly a rarity in modern science, as he develops potentially revolutionary ideas about how our world works.

A Zen Buddhist masterpiece, winner of the 2018 Thornton Wilder Prize for Translation. The Platform Sutra occupies a central place in Zen (Ch’an) Buddhist instruction for students and spiritual seekers worldwide. It is often linked with The Heart Sutra and The Diamond Sutra to form a trio of texts that have been revered and studied for centuries. However, unlike the other sutras, which transcribe the teachings of the Buddha himself, The Platform Sutra presents the autobiography of Hui-neng, the controversial 6th Patriarch of Zen, and his understanding of the fundamentals of a spiritual and practical life. Hui-neng’s instruction still matters—the 7th-century school of Sudden Awakening that he founded survives today, continuing to influence the Rinzai and Soto schools of contemporary Zen. Red Pine, whose translations of The Heart Sutra and The Diamond Sutra have been celebrated and widely received, now provides a sensitive and assured treatment of the third and final sutra of the classic triumvirate. He adds remarkable commentary to a translation that, combined with the full Chinese text, a glossary, and notes, results in a Mahayana masterpiece sure to become the standard edition for students and seekers alike.
