"Government intervention in the institutions of money and banking sowed the seeds of the worldwide asset bubble in the early and mid-2000s, which could only result in a giant crash according to this line of thought. Once the crash had occurred, the recession was prolonged by yet more government intervention in the form of massive deficits, expansion of unemployment payments, and ever more regulations on businesses in the private sector. Only by returning to a genuinely free market, based on the classical liberal notions of private property, civil liberties, and peace among nations, can we return to the prosperity and steady improvement of living conditions that we had come to take for granted. Those who endorse the Austrian analysis believe it is crucial to spread this message, not just to academics, but to the intelligent layperson as well. That is the primary function of the present volume. It provides an introduction and an invitation to the most important work of arguably the most important Austrian economist"--

Economics originated as a branch of the humane studies that was concerned with trying to understand how some societies flourish while others stagnate, and also how once-flourishing societies could come to stagnate. Over the major part of the 20th century, however, economists mostly turned away from these humane and societal concerns by importing mechanistic ideas from 19th century physics. This book seeks to show how that original humane and social focus can be renewed. The many particular topics the book examines can be traced to two central ideas. Firstly, that economic theory, like physics, requires two distinct theoretical frameworks. One treats qualities that are invariant across time and place; this is the domain of equilibrium theory. The other treats the internal generation of change in societies through entrepreneurial action that continually transforms the ecology of enterprises that constitutes a society. Secondly, economic theory is treated as a genuine social science and not a science of rationality writ large. The book also explores ways in which life in society is understood differently once economics is treated as a social science. The book is much of the hyper-formality that comprises economic theory these days fails to make reasonable contact with reality. It will be of interest to sociologists, political scientists, and researchers in law, public policy, Austrian economics, evolutionary economics, institutional economics and political economy.

Conway Sax is a man on a mission—this time all the way out to Los Angeles, where he has sworn to track down and rescue Kenny Spoon, a washed-up TV star who has been kidnapped by gangsters. Conway, who’s never met Kenny, is doing a favor for Eudora Spoon, a dear friend and fellow member of the Barnburners, the tight-knit maverick AA group whose members Conway has sworn to help. After hauling Kenny back to Massachusetts, Conway finds himself caught between Eudora and her two sons: Kenny, and Harmon, the local police chief who resents his talented, troubled half-brother. Each member of the Spoon family distrusts and even despises the others, it seems … and each has a past full of dark secrets that may explain why. While Conway unravels this mystery, Eudora is murdered on her own estate by a sniper. She dies in Conway’s arms, muttering cryptically that “they can have it.” Conway vows to avenge the murder, but the clues he uncovers only seem to point to more suspects. Things get even more complicated when Conway, still separated from his girlfriend Charlene, begins a passionate affair with Tricia, Harmon’s estranged wife, that can’t help but cloud his judgment. The more secrets Conway uncovers, the more danger he’s in as Wolverine Bros. Freight & Storage, this masterfully written page-turner from critically acclaimed author Steve Ulfelder, builds to a wrenching confrontation.

But its truly unique goal is to present this complex set of issues in ways that facilitate an organized response. To this end, the book also focuses on the complex relationship between problems and society's own ideological relationship with these problems. How do human priorities and perceptions aggravate or enable problems? What are the established and alternative responses? The Encyclopedia contains over 158,000 cross-references between entries, an extensive 91,000 practical key term index, bibliographies, and full cross-referencing to the Yearbook of International Organizations. Evidence of violence and hatred worldwide - from the bombing of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001 to the war in Iraq to the recent war between Israel and Hezbollah - call special attention to the critical importance of empathy in human affairs. Only when we begin to understand more fully the workings of empathy do we begin to be able to make sense of what happens to humans on a global scale. In Empathy in a Global World, Carolyn Calloway-Thomas examines the nature and zones of empathy, exploring how an understanding of empathy shapes global talk and action. This text presents the foundations of empathy, the historical beginnings of empathy, and the global practices of empathy, all with an eye toward understanding how and why this important concept matters. This book explores how empathetic literacy is crucial in addressing intercultural issues; how it is needed in decision making; how it is communicated via the media; and how it affects global issues such as poverty and environmental diasters. Second, the book goes beyond existing knowledge on empathy and extends into the realms of media, global class issues, the world of NGOs, and natural disasters. As such, the book takes readers on a tour of empathyÆs nature, uses, practices and potentials in this manner. In this regard, the proposed book breaks new and compelling ground.Third, in its scope, the book exploits the disciplines of communication, black studies, education, history, cultural studies, media, philanthropy, psychology, religious studies, and sociology to bring fresh insights into the discourse, dynamics, patterns, and practices of empathy.
