How do we spot a familiar face from across a crowded room, and know that we're not waving to a complete stranger? How can we judge that an oncoming car is approaching too fast for us to cross the road safely, and immediately determine that we're better off waiting at the curb? Basic Vision: An Introduction to Visual Perception demystifies the processes through which the brain "sees." It leads us through the various elements that come together in our perception of the world around us: size, color, motion, and three-dimensional space. The book illustrates the intricacy of the visual system, discussing its development during infancy, and reveals how the brain can get it wrong. It also demonstrates the importance of contemporary techniques and methodology--neuroscience-based techniques in particular--in advancing our understanding of the visual system. With a sense of enthusiasm for the subject that pervades the book, Basic Vision is ideal for undergraduate courses in visual perception. I have been asked to write a brief foreword to this volume honoring Hisako Ikeda, providing a review of the accomplishments in our field over the past four decades, when Hisako was an active participant. This I am delighted to do. It has been a most exciting time in vision research and Hisako has been right in the middle of much of the excitement, publishing on a wide variety of topics and providing much new data and many new insights. Hisako's research career can be divided by decades into four quite distinct areas of inquiry. In the 1950s, as a student in Japan, her research interests were psychophysical in nature, and she was concerned with visual illusions, figural aftereffects, and motion detec tion. In the 1960s, after her move to London, she began electrophysiological studies. Much of her work in the 1960s was concerned with the electroretinogram (ERG), its components, and the use of this electrical response for evaluating spectral sensitivities of the eye and retinal degenerations. This work represented the beginning of her electrodiagnostic clinical work, which continued until her retirement.

Basic and Clinical Applications of Vision Sciences contains the edited papers presented at the Enoch Vision Science Symposium, April 27-30 1996, which was organized in honor of the pioneer in vision science, Dr Jay M Enoch. Dr Enoch served for twelve years as Dean, School of Optometry, University of California, Berkeley. The book is organized along the lines of Dr. Enoch's contributions to vision science, but is not limited to these topics. Of special note, the reader will find papers on important new developments in photoreceptor, ophthalmic and visual optics, retinal imaging, ophthalmic physiology and pathophysiology, visual psychophysics and visual techniques. The papers are grouped into the following sections: photoreceptor optics; ophthalmic and visual optics; binocular vision, developmental vision, eye movements and physiology; ophthalmic dysfunction; visual psychophysics and clinical applications; history of vision science. £/LIST£

From the author of the highly acclaimed Book of VB .NET comes this comprehensive introduction to Visual Basic 2005, the newest version of Microsoft’s popular programming language. If you’re a developer who is new to the language, you will learn to use VB 2005 effectively. If you’re from the old school of VB but haven’t yet made the jump to .NET, you will be able to make the transition seamlessly. And you won’t have to wade through boring, unnecessary material before you get there. This guide covers all the necessities, ditching jargon and getting right to the substance of how to: * Implement object-oriented programming with classes, interfaces, and inheritance * Design well-behaved multithreaded applications * Work with XML, file streams, and ADO.NET, the .NET toolkit for relational databases * Build code-driven web pages and rich Windows applications * Deploy your applications with snazzy setup programs Conversational in tone and eminently readable, this book tackles VB 2005’s hot new features and explains how to work with .NET, but it doesn’t water the information down for beginners. After a brief overview of changes from VB 6, you’ll get real-world examples in each chapter that will get you up to speed and ready to perform in the VB 2005 environment. Helpful code examples, references to additional online material, and tips on planning, design, and architecture round out The Book of Visual Basic 2005. Professional developers who need to master VB 2005 will want this book by their side.

Many robotics researchers consider high-level vision algorithms (computational) too expensive for use in robot guidance. This book introduces the reader to an alternative approach to perception for autonomous, mobile robots. It explores how to apply methods of high-level computer vision and fuzzy logic to the guidance and control of the mobile robot. The book introduces a knowledge-based approach to vision modeling for robot guidance, where advantage is taken of constraints of the robot's physical structure, the tasks it performs, and the environments it works in. This facilitates high-level computer vision algorithms such as object recognition at a speed that is sufficient for real-time navigation. The texts presents algorithms that exploit these constraints at all levels of vision, from image processing to model construction and matching, as well as shape recovery. These algorithms are demonstrated in the navigation of a wheeled mobile robot.

Welcometothe7thAsianConferenceonComputerVision.Itgivesusgreatpl- sure to bring forth its proceedings. ACCV has been making its rounds through the Asian landscape and came to India this year. We are proud of the technical program we have put together and we hope you enjoy it. Interest in computer vision is increasing and ACCV 2006 attracted about 500 submission. The evaluation team consisted of 27 experts serving as Area Chairs and about 270 reviewers in all. The whole process was conducted electronically in a double-blind manner,a ?rstfor ACCV. Eachpaper wasassignedto an Area Chair who found three competent reviewers for it. We were able to contain the maximum load on the reviewers to nine and the average load to less than six. The review form had space for qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the paper on nine aspects. The submitted reviews underwent an elaborate process. First, they were seen by the Area Chair, who resolved divergences of opinion among reviewers, if any. The Area Chair then wrote qualitative comments and a quantitative score along with his/her initial recommendation on the paper. These were looked at by Program Co-chairs and compiled into a probables list. The Area Chairs and Program Co-chairs met in Beijing during ICCV to discuss this list and arrivedat the ?nal list of 64 oral papers and 128 posters. Naturally, many deserving papers could not be accommodated.
