"Bye Nonna," I whispered again, and touched her arm just above the bed sheet. I gazed at her one final time, and like those summer days I spent memorizing her features and the sound of her voice, I studied her this time too. I felt I would soon need all those memories. I left the room not fully realizing this was the last time I would see her alive. An Ordinary Life occurs between birth and death. As he experiences the final days of his grandfather's life, author Charles J. Alaimo relives another painful chapter in his memory-the death of his grandmother, Nonna Maria, nineteen years earlier. Through her life, faith, and the courage with which she battles cancer, this simple Sicilian grandmother has a profound effect on her young grandson, changing his life forever. An Ordinary Life gives us hope that, despite death, our loved ones remain with us, guiding us through life's journey.

This book is about the three phases of the life of Herman Eugene Kessler Jr.: military officer, computer administrator, and educator. Born in Manhattan, New York, my mother was Annah Noering, and my father was Herman Eugene Kessler. I grew up in Brooklyn and, in 1940, received a scholarship from Harvard College. I was graduated in June 1943 summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. Commissioned a second lieutenant in November 1943, I fought in Italy and received two battle stars. On February 1, 1949, I was married to Mary Clarkson Boykin. We had two children and are still together after more than sixty years. I was graduated from Harvard Business School in 1950 with High Distinction having been selected as a Baker Scholar (HBS Honor Society). During my military career, I was graduated from the United States Army Command and General Staff College and the Army War College. I commanded field artillery units in Italy, Korea, Germany, and the United States and served as a staff officer at field army, theater army, department of the army, and joint staff levels. I retired on July 1, 1970 as a permanent regular army colonel. After retiring, I became assistant director of the Test Development Division, Educational Testing Service in Princeton, New Jersey. In 1971, Henry Chauncey, retiring president of ETS, asked me to come with him as the vice president and treasurer of EDUCOM, a consortium of colleges concerned with computing in higher education. In 1980, we moved to Chapel Hill, and I became an adjunct professor of business administration in the University of North Carolina. In 1988, we moved to Camden, and I retired for the last time. In 2005, we moved to Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community in West Columbia, South Carolina, where we still live.

Full of wisdom and honesty, Not Quite an Ordinary Life shares the rather extraordinary life of J. David Joyce, a common man who took the common man's journey through life. One of eight children born to an Irish Catholic housepainter and his wife, Joyce grew up in the midst of poverty in a small New York town. In his youth, he endured (and survived) Catholic school, dealt with his father's addiction to morphine, and learned the importance of hard work. As an adult, he served a tour of duty in Vietnam, suffered through financial difficulties, and mourned the death of his only son. Yet through it all, Joyce continued to believe in a better life for himself and his family. His middle class success included a solid marriage, wonderful children, advanced education, and worldwide travel. He enjoyed a twenty-year career in the US Air Force working in foreign intelligence collection and analysis, as well as being a counselor to veterans. In later years, he became an IRS agent and finished his working life as an accountant. Rich with detail and brimming with emotion, Not Quite an Ordinary Life reveals one man's strength and courage against the odds and his remarkable zest in pursuing the American dream.

Do you ever wonder, somewhere deep in your heart, if all those things the nuns or your Sunday school teacher taught you are really true? Does doubt ever taunt you, whispering in the silence, “I just don’t believe all that stuff anymore ...”? Do you hold close the unspoken worry of what will really happen to you when you die? It is easy to feel God in the flowers of spring, the solitude of a world blanketed in snow, or the laughter of children at play. It is never hard to imagine the hand of our Creator in the sunrise over the ocean, the majesty of the Rockies, or the billions of stars visible on a clear night in the country. What of the dark times, though? Where is God when your business fails, or you lose your job, or a loved one is injured in an accident or diagnosed with cancer and dies? Is God there when you struggle to make ends meet, when your child is hurt in a fall or, when you think yourself alone and abandoned? When Jesus said, “With God all things are possible,” He meant it. We pray that by sharing our ordinary lives, our extraordinary God will bless and encourage you.
