A Serious Genre: The Apology of Children’s Literature is a collection of essays by scholars and academics from Romania, the United States and Turkey, who investigate the value and impact of what, since the 19th century, has been called, using an umbrella term, children’s literature. The volume is the fourth in a series, which focuses on literary genres which are considered marginal or low-brow, but which have a long tradition and display remarkable versatility and popularity. Previous volumes in the collection presented the historical novel (2010), romance (2012), and fantasy (2014). In this book, fourteen essays approach children’s literature from different angles, from classical Victorian children’s books to the latest film adaptation of The Hobbit, from adult narrators of children’s stories to children narrators of adult stories. The book addresses researchers, teachers and students with an interest in literature, literary theory and genre analysis, but it will also appeal to the wider public, given the flexibility and friendly nature of children’s literature.

Although certain aspects of C.S. Lewis’s work have been studied in great detail, others have been comparatively neglected. This collection of essays looks at Lewis’s life and work, and those of his friends and associates, from many different angles, but all connected through a common theme of identity. Questions of identity are essential to the understanding of any writer. The ways authors perceive themselves and who they are, the communities they belong to by birth or choice, inevitably influence their work. The way they present other people, real or fictional, are also rooted in their own conception of identity. In this volume, scholars from several countries examine gender and family roles; national, regional, racial and professional identities; membership of a particular church; ideological attachments and personal descriptions, either with regard to Lewis and those who knew him and influenced him, or in a study of their writings. Authors studied here include J.R.R. Tolkien, Dorothy L. Sayers, Charles Williams, George MacDonald and T.S. Eliot.

We live in a natural world of immense size and beauty. We marvel at its contents (from the microscopic to the cosmic), enjoy its many patterns (whether in snowflakes or in the rings of Saturn) and occasionally delve into its intricate processes. The products of past natural events lie scattered about, awaiting discovery, analysis and appreciation. We are drawn to wonder what lies beyond our vision and our understanding. Why is the nature of Nature so attractive? A musical score, a piece of literature or a magnificent painting all reflect something of the minds that fashioned them. Can the same be said of the Mind that fashioned all things, from atoms, babies and raindrops, to oceans, mountains and spiralling galaxies?

John Calvin saw this world as God’s theater where his glory is always on display. Just as “day and night pour forth speech,” the universe and history are not silent either; they tell the glory of God. Reflecting on over 500 years of Calvin’s legacy, John Piper and this book’s other contributors invite us to join Calvin in the theater of God. Stemming from the Desiring God 2009 National Conference, this volume includes chapters by Julius Kim, Douglas Wilson, Marvin Olasky, Mark Talbot, Sam Storms, and John Piper. It touches on topics such as Calvin’s life, the Christian meaning of public life, sin and suffering, the joy of the last resurrection, and Jesus Christ as the dénouement of God’s story. Editors John Piper and David Mathis, along with the contributors, make John Calvin’s Christ-exalting perspective on the glory of God accessible to today’s readers. Both Calvinists and other evangelicals interested in the life and work of Calvin will find these essays refreshing and instructive, leading to a robust understanding of the world as the theater of God.

This book reveals that much of Christianity and its beliefs had originated in ancient Egypt rather than the Middle East. The author presents us with how, where and why many spiritual Egyptian beliefs were adopted into Christian form and accepted as "history," as opposed to being carried over in their original mythological form. Kuhn states, "The gospels are not and never were histories. They are now proven to have been cryptic dramas of the spiritual evolution of humanity and of the history of the human soul in its earthly tabernacle of flesh." For Christianity to be expressed in the way it was first intended, as experienced during the first two centuries of its existence, one must first acknowledge its pagan roots. This is too much of a leap for most people, but they have not read this book. The author reveals how things were altered in the third century by the existing priesthood and why.
