Utilizing the latest software, this book presents the essentialstatistical procedures for drawing valuable results from data inthe social sciences. Mobilizing interesting real-world examples from the field ofeducation, Understanding Educational Statistics Using MicrosoftExcel and SPSS supplies a seamless presentation that identifiesvaluable connections between statistical applications and researchdesign. Class-tested to ensure an accessible presentation, the bookcombines clear, step-by-step explanations and the use of softwarepackages that are accessible to both the novice and professionalalike to present the fundamental statistical practices fororganizing, understanding, and drawing conclusions from educationalresearch data. The book begines with an introduction to descriptive andinferential statistics and then proceeds to acquaint readers withthe various functions for working with quantitative data in theMicrosoft Excel environment, such as spreadsheet navigation;sorting and filtering; and creating pivot tables. Subsequentchapters treat the procedures that are commonly-employed whenworking with data across various fields of social science research, including: Single-sample tests Repeated measure tests Independent t-tests One way ANOVA and factorial ANOVA Correlation Bivariate regression Chi square Multiple regression Individual chapters are devoted to specific procedures, eachending with a lab exercise that highlights the importance of thatprocedure by posing a research question, examining the questionthrough its application in Excel and SPSS, and concluding with abrief research report that outlines key findings drawn from theresults. Real-world examples and data from modern educationalresearch are used throughout the book, and a related Web sitefeatures additional data sets, examples, and labs, allowing readersto reinforce their comprehension of the material. Bridging traditional statistical topics with the latest softwareand applications in the field of education, UnderstandingEducational Statistics Using Microsoft Excel and SPSS is anexcellent book for courses on educational research methods andintroductory statistics in the social sciences at theupper-undergraduate and graduate levels. It also serves as avaluable resource for researchers and practitioners in the fieldsof education, psychology, and the social sciences who require astatistical background to work with data in their everydaywork.

Understanding And Applying Research Design

Author : Martin Lee Abbott
ISBN : 9781118605295
Genre : Mathematics
File Size : 57. 2 MB
Format : PDF, ePub, Docs

A fresh approach to bridging research design with statistical analysis While good social science requires both research design and statistical analysis, most books treat these two areas separately. Understanding and Applying Research Design introduces an accessible approach to integrating design and statistics, focusing on the processes of posing, testing, and interpreting research questions in the social sciences. The authors analyze real-world data using SPSS software, guiding readers on the overall process of science, focusing on premises, procedures, and designs of social scientific research. Three clearly organized sections move seamlessly from theoretical topics to statistical techniques at the heart of research procedures, and finally, to practical application of research design: Premises of Research introduces the research process and the capabilities of SPSS, with coverage of ethics, Empirical Generalization, and Chi Square and Contingency Table Analysis Procedures of Research explores key quantitative methods in research design including measurement, correlation, regression, and causation Designs of Research outlines various design frameworks, with discussion of survey research, aggregate research, and experiments Throughout the book, SPSS software is used to showcase the discussed techniques, and detailed appendices provide guidance on key statistical procedures and tips for data management. Numerous exercises allow readers to test their comprehension of the presented material, and a related website features additional data sets and SPSS code. Understanding and Applying Research Design is an excellent book for social sciences and education courses on research methods at the upper-undergraduate level. The book is also an insightful reference for professionals who would like to learn how to pose, test, and interpret research questions with confidence.

The Sage Encyclopedia Of Educational Research Measurement And Evaluation

Author : Bruce B. Frey
ISBN : 9781506326177
Genre : Education
File Size : 54. 74 MB
Format : PDF, ePub, Docs

In an era of curricular changes and experiments and high-stakes testing, educational measurement and evaluation is more important than ever. In addition to expected entries covering the basics of traditional theories and methods, other entries discuss important sociopolitical issues and trends influencing the future of that research and practice. Textbooks, handbooks, monographs and other publications focus on various aspects of educational research, measurement and evaluation, but to date, there exists no major reference guide for students new to the field. This comprehensive work fills that gap, covering traditional areas while pointing the way to future developments. Features: Nearly 700 signed entries are contained in an authoritative work spanning four volumes and available in choice of electronic and/or print formats. Although organized A-to-Z, front matter includes a Reader’s Guide grouping entries thematically to help students interested in a specific aspect of education research, measurement, and evaluation to more easily locate directly related entries. (For instance, sample themes include Data, Evaluation, Measurement Concepts & Issues, Research, Sociopolitical Issues, Standards.) Back matter includes a Chronology of the development of the field; a Resource Guide to classic books, journals, and associations; and a detailed Index. Entries conclude with References/Further Readings and Cross References to related entries. The Index, Reader’s Guide themes, and Cross References will combine to provide robust search-and-browse in the e-version.

Analysis Of Experimental Data Microsoft Excel Or Spss Sharing Of Experience English Version

The first characteristic of this book is the skipping of difficult theories, starting directly with typical examples, and the working out of the answers clearly by computer software. The aim is to help readers to be able to solve basic statistical problems in various Common Experimental Designs as soon as possible, and to be confident to run the tests and interpret the computer output, without being hesitated by the starting with large amount of difficult theories behind. This book has been reviewed by some experts as ‘...very practical, illustrative and directive, and is very useful for both practitioners and those who perform statistical analysis in experimental designs...’ One the other hand, there is a general belief that after getting a significant Anova result, using the built-in ‘Analysis TookPak’ Microsoft®Excel Add-In, nothing can be done further to find where do the differences exist, and we must use large packages such as SPSS to complete the job! However, we find that this might not be absolutely true. We can often find similar results as using SPSS by combining the overall Anova results with a few, simple, manual steps introduced in this book! An Microsoft®Excel Add-In ‘PHStat2 ver.3.0’, from Dr Robert Jantzen, University of Connecticut, Stamford, is totally free also and seems even more powerful than Analysis TookPak, including a ‘more automatic’ Tukey’s-Kramer’ Multiple Comparison Post Hoc Test. Lastly, we would introduce a very powerful Microsoft®Excel Add-In, ‘XLSTAT’, that can perform many important statistical tests as if using SPSS! Although this is not totally free, it provides a 30 days full function trial version and a student annual price of only US\$ 50, that is much cheaper than SPSS etc.! We would use it to show ‘Repeated Measures’, ‘Repeated measures Anova’ and ‘Ancova’ that are only analyzed by e.g. SPSS otherwise.
