An essential volume for theater artists and students alike, this anthology includes the full texts of sixteen important examples of avant-garde drama from the most daring and influential artistic movements of the first half of the twentieth century, including Symbolism, Futurism, Expressionism, Dada, and Surrealism. Each play is accompanied by a bio-critical introduction by the editor, and a critical essay, frequently written by the playwright, which elaborates on the play’s dramatic and aesthetic concerns. A new introduction by Robert Knopf and Julia Listengarten contextualizes the plays in light of recent critical developments in avant-garde studies. By examining the groundbreaking theatrical experiments of Jarry, Maeterlinck, Strindberg, Artaud, and others, the book foregrounds the avant-garde’s enduring influence on the development of modern theater.

New Deal Theater recovers a much ignored model of political theater for cultural criticism. While considered to be less radical in its aesthetics and politics than its celebrated Weimar and Soviet cousins, it nonetheless proved to be highly effective in asserting cultural critique. In this regard it offers a vital alternative to the dominant modernist paradigm developed in Europe. Rather than radicalizing content and form, New Deal theater insisted that the political had to be made commensurable with the language of a mass audience steeped in consumer culture. The resulting vernacular praxis emphasized empathy over alienation, verisimilitude over abstraction. By examining the cultural vectors that shaped this theater, Saal shows why it was more successful on the American stage than its European counterpart and develops a theory of vernacular political theater which can help us think of the political in art in other than modernist terms.

This book examines the historical, cultural, and aesthetic relationships between theater and film. As we enter the 21st century, almost all artists, students, and critics working in theater will have had earlier and greater exposure to film than to theater. In fact, film has become central to the way in which we perceive and formulate stories, images, ideas, and sounds. At the same time, film and video occupy an increasingly significant place in theater study, both for the adaptation of plays and for the documentation and preservation of theatrical performances. Yet far too often theater and film artists, as well as educators, make the jump from one medium to the other without being fully aware of the ways in which the qualities of each medium affect content and artistic expression. This book is intended to fill such a gap by providing a theoretical and practical foundation for understanding the effect that film and drama have had, and continue to have, on each other's development. Moreover, this study provides a history of the relationship between drama and cinema, starting with the pre-cinematic, late 19th-century impulse towards capturing spectacular action on the stage and examining the artistic and commercial interaction between movies and plays, both in popular and experimental work, throughout the 20th century. Important subjects treated in this book include stage versus screen acting, the adaptation process itself, the theatrical as well as the cinematic avant-garde, and the « portability or adaptability of dramatic character.

"American Drama/Critics: Writings and Readings" is a collection of essays on acknowledged classics of American drama such as "Death of a Salesman," "The Glass Menagerie," and "Our Town," and on newer but no less esteemed works like David Mamet's "Glengarry Glen Ross" and Sam Shepard's "Buried Child." Included are interviews with the great American drama critics Eric Bentley and Stanley Kauffmann; a consideration of the practice of American dramaturgy; an analysis of the adaptation to film of several American dramas; and an examination of experimental playwriting and production in the United States, as seen in the work of Gertrude Stein as well as that of other, lesser-known avant-garde dramatists. This book's thesis is not only the generally accepted one that American drama is essentially a representational one and that its avant-garde experiments are just that--experimental detours that ultimate lead back to the main highway of realism and naturalism. The thesis of "Americam Drama/Critics" is also that the decline of American drama in the late twentieth to early twenty-first century is paralleled by, and even attributable to, the decline or disappearance of American dramatic criticism.

The theater of Carlo Terron (1910-1991) is perhaps the most varied of his generation. His works range from the grotesque to the tragic, from psychological drama to allegorical farce. Whether it takes the form of comedy or serious drama, Terron's oeuvre is essentially concerned with an investigation of the roots of guilt, and as such, it reflects the moral climate of post-World War II Italy. In this respect, Terron's plays may be compared to those of his contemporaries, Ugo Betti and Diego Fabbri, which focus on similar moral issues and sometimes also employ the trial format. In most of his plays, Terron used his training as a psychiatrist to provide the intellectual framework for a world view in which the motives for action are seen as being so intertwined with the complex nature of life that it is almost impossible to fix individual moral responsibility. If Terron's protagonists reject judgment by others, however, they are very quick to accuse, judge, and even punish themselves. The Theater of Carlo Terron will for the first time introduce this compelling dramatist to the English-speaking world. Included are not only chronologies of Terron's life and work, but, most importantly, two of his best and most representative works: The Trial of the Innocents (1950) and Arsenic, Tonight! (1967).
