Ayatollah Murtaza Mutahhari was a significant figure in the movement which brought the Islamic Republic of Iran into being. Mutahhari, a student of Ayatollah Khomeini and particularly close to his mentor, had broad theoretical concerns regarding religion, society and economy. He is generally considered as a prominent contemporary intellectual figure among the Iranian and Shi'ite scholars of the time. This book describes the life and works of this philosopher, jurist, preacher and writer, who was educated in the Qum Seminary and worked in Tehran.

This first full-length study of the history of Iranian anthropology charts the formation and development of anthropology in Iran in the twentieth century. The text examines how and why anthropology and culture became part of wider socio-political discourses in Iran, and how they were appropriated, and rejected, by the pre- and post-revolutionary regimes. The author highlights the three main phases of Iranian anthropology, corresponding broadly to three periods in the social and political development of Iran: *the period of nationalism: lasting approximately from the constitutional revolution (1906-11) and the end of the Qajar dynasty until the end of Reza Shah’s reign (1941) *the period of Nativism: from the 1950s until the Islamic revolution (1979) *the post-revolutionary period. In addition, the book places Iranian anthropology in an international context by demonstrating how Western anthropological concepts, theories and methodologies affected epistemological and political discourses on Iranian anthropology.

"Mahmood T. Davari is uniquely qualified to write about this influential man, having been one of Mutahhari's students, as well as the student of Mutahhari's lifelong friend, Ayatullah Montazeri. Drawing upon firsthand reports, notes and interviews with Mutahhari's family and friends, the author highlights less-documented parts of the political trends in contemporary Iranian society. This book will appeal to scholars and students interested in modern Iranian politics and those with an interest in representations of Islam and Shi'ism."--BOOK JACKET.

The contentious engagement with Western thought is one of the focal points of Iranian intellectual life. This volume examines two major figures in 20th century Iranian intellectual history, Muhammad Husayn Tabatabaí (1903–1981) and Mortaza Motahhari (1920–1979), and presents their historical views on Western and Islamic philosophy. It also describes the impact of their ideas on pre-revolutionary Iranian thinking.

English description: The present book is the first large-scale research on the Central Asian crafts' risala, a pre-Soviet code of conduct, and describes the crafts spiritual and social roots by drawing on oral and written sources.
