This "abridged" edition is huge -- the equivalent of 10 books the size of Tom Sawyer. The first edition, published 1890, was 2 volumes. The second, published in 1900, was 3 volumes. The third edition, published 1906-1915, was 12 volumes. This edition was published in 1922. According to Wikipedia: "The Golden Bough: A Study in Magic and Religion is a wide-ranging, comparative study of mythology and religion, written by Scottish anthropologist James George Frazer (1854–1941). It first was published in two volumes in 1890; the third edition, published 1906–15, comprised twelve volumes. It was aimed at a broad literate audience raised on tales as told in such publications as Thomas Bulfinch's The Age of Fable, or Stories of Gods and Heroes (1855). It offered a modernist approach to discussing religion, treating it dispassionately as a cultural phenomenon rather than from a theological perspective. The impact of The Golden Bough on contemporary European literature was substantial."

The authoritative 1890 edition with an introduction by Cairns Craig and Frazer’s own afterword. Published originally in two volumes in 1890, this extraordinary study of primitive myth and magic led Scottish anthropologist J.G. Frazer to identify parallel patterns of ritual, symbols and belief across many centuries and many different cultures. His observations on the mysteries of fertility and death, and the rites of the sacrificial king who must die to save his people, overturned much of contemporary intellectual thinking, not least because of the enlightening or ‘heretical’ parallels it suggested with the Christian religion. Frazer’s elegant and authoritative style, and the breadth of his learning inspired a whole generation of ethnographers and comparative anthropologists, and had a particularly powerful effect on many other thinkers and writers such as Sigmund Freud, D.H. Lawrence, Joyce, Yeats and T.S. Eliot. This definitive volume includes the unabridged original 1890 edition as well as several essays and lectures by Frazer. ‘Frazer’s work has epic scale yet mesmerizing fineness of detail. We see the great structures of civilization forming and melting against a background of elemental mystery. The effect is cinematic and sublime.’ Camille Paglia

Sir James George Frazer originally set out to discover the origins of one ancient custom in Classical Rome - the plucking of the Golden Bough from a tree in the sacred grove of Diana, and the murderous succession of the priesthood there - and was led by his investigations into a twenty-five year study of primitive customs, superstitions, magic and myth throughout the world. The monumental thirteen-volume work which resulted has been a rich source of anthropological material and a literary masterpiece for more than half a century. - The Golden Bough is an essential reference work for all involved in the intellectual disciplines of anthropology and the history of religion but also on literature and the arts. - The third edition, reprinted here was Frazer's final authoritative statement in which he offered readers a dramatically new way of understanding the religious beliefs and behaviour of the ancient world and their connection to those of the 'primitive' world that then made up much of the British Empire. - Frazer's three-stage evolutionary ladder of magic-religion-science gave his large readership a clear way of understanding, in David Hume's phrase, 'the natural history of religion'. - The third edition is presented with two major works of scholarship enabling readers to understand the origins, development and importance of Frazer's landmark work - The first extra volume is an out of print biography of J.G. Frazer by Professor Robert Ackerman first published by Cambridge University Press, Professor Ackerman also provides us with an excellent introduction in this volume. - The second volume contains Dr Robert Fraser's The Making of the Golden Bough. - These volumes are available as a two-volume set as well as being part of the fifteen volume set.
