"Sanders, whose first novel Kamikaze Lust, won a 2000 Lambda Literary Award, offers an international espionage thriller in which a failed Olympic speed skater falls for her father's lover, a former Israeli army pilot turned corporate spy." --Publishers Weekly "Jennifer Baron, a failed speed skater, tries to stay sober after her Olympic downfall. She's running her father's business, a billion-dollar foundation, when he mysteriously disappears. Soon she's invited to a conference that turns out to be a covert meeting with her father and a corporate spy." --Publishers Weekly; included in Fall 2017 Adult Announcements, Literary Fiction "The Book of Love and Hate is a most fantastic book--cinematic, a thriller that takes on both the big, global issues of our time as well as the intimate, personal demons that undo us. A book about obsession, it obsessed me. How incredible to come upon such a brainy, expertly written bona fide page-turner. Bravo!" --Michelle Tea, author of Black Wave "A richly suspenseful story of addiction, love/lust, and family ties--and how all of those things can hold us captive. A spectacular return from one of my favorite writers." --Alison Gaylin, best-selling author of What Remains of Me "The Book of Love and Hate is a fever dream of a novel, achingly sexy and at times startlingly funny. Lauren Sanders has written a stunning genre-defying tale of sex, longing, ghosts, and spies. Every page teems with her gleaming sentences and deliciously dark wit. The ending still haunts me." --J.T. Rogers, author of Oslo Jennifer Baron is a failed Olympic speed skater now running her family's foundation and trying to stay sober, when her billionaire father disappears. She travels to Israel in search of him, becoming recklessly entangled in his illegal dealings and with his enigmatic lover, Gila, a former Mossad agent gone bad. Along the way, she is drawn into the shadow worlds of the Promised Land, where career-jockeying government agents, fake Orthodox Jews, queer Palestinians on the run, and other displaced wanderers scramble to find home amid the endless cycles of war, occupation, and heartbreak. The Book of Love and Hate is an unraveling of white-collar crime and its motivations. It's a testament to the magnificent oblivion of love and a shattering of inherited trauma, both personal and historical.

Quotes are great source of knowledge, wisdom and insight. They help us to learn through forerunners and pathfinders who pioneered certain paths in life that we are yet to travel. They are great tools to reinforce and reaffirm what we already know but do not understand, or what we do and react to in our daily basis but do not make a philosophy out of it. It is such ignored realities or less attended to histories and discoveries which when they become words uttered by famous or successful people they become quotes, references and philosophy enough to help us accept it, or an idea, we apply it and see transformations in our lives. Quotes discover a philosophy, strengthen a belief or ideology, create a driving force in people to pursue their dreams. They are an effective weapon to uphold or dismiss certain philosophies in our midst. They are sophisticated way or simple art of using few words to mean a lot. The author argues that there are specific turning points in evolution. Structures and behavioral patterns that evolved in the service of discrete functions sometimes allow for unforeseen new developments as a side effect. In retrospect, they have proven to be pre-adaptations, and serve as raw material for natural selection to work upon. Love and Hate was intended to complement Konrad Lorenz's book, On Aggression, by pointing out our motivations to provide nurturing, and thus to counteract and correct the widespread but one-sided opinion that biologists always present nature as bloody in tooth and claw and intra-specific aggression as the prime mover of evolution. This simplistic image is, nonetheless, still with us, all the more regrettably because it hampers discussion across scholarly disciplines. Eibl-Eibesfeldt argues that leaders in individualized groups are chosen for their pro-social abilities. Those who comfort group members in distress, who are able to intervene in quarrels and to protect group members who are attacked, those who share, those who, in brief, show abilities to nurture, are chosen by the others as leaders, rather than those who use their abilities in competitive ways. Of course, group leaders may need, beyond their pro-social competence, to be gifted as orators, war leaders, or healers. Issues of love and hate are social in origin and hence social in consequence. Life has emerged on this planet in a succession of new forms, from the simplest algae to man-man the one being who reflects upon this creation, who seeks to fashion it himself and who, in the process, may end by destroying it. It would indeed be grotesque if the question of the meaning of life were to be solved in this way. In language that is clear and accessible throughout, arguing forcefully for the innate and "preprogrammed" dispositions of behavior in higher vertebrates, including humans, Eibl-Eibesfeldt steers a middle course in discussing the development of cultural and ethical

A New York Times Notable Book and aSan Jose Mercury News Top 20 Nonfiction Book of 2003In 1606, approximately 105 British colonists sailed to America, seeking gold and a trade route to the Pacific. Instead, they found disease, hunger, and hostile natives. Ill prepared for such hardship, the men responded with incompetence and infighting; only the leadership of Captain John Smith averted doom for the first permanent English settlement in the New World. The Jamestown colony is one of the great survival stories of American history, and this book brings it fully to life for the first time. Drawing on extensive original documents, David A. Price paints intimate portraits of the major figures from the formidable monarch Chief Powhatan, to the resourceful but unpopular leader John Smith, to the spirited Pocahontas, who twice saved Smith’s life. He also gives a rare balanced view of relations between the settlers and the natives and debunks popular myths about the colony. This is a superb work of history, reminding us of the horrors and heroism that marked the dawning of our nation. From the Trade Paperback edition.

Using phenomenology to uncover the implicit logic in personal love, sexual love, and hatred, Peter Hadreas provides new insights into the uniqueness of the beloved and offers fresh explanations for some of the worst outbreaks of violence and hatred in modern times. Topics discussed include the value and subjectivity of personal love, nudity and the temporality of sexual love, the connection between personal, sexual love, and the incest taboo, the development of group-focused hatred from individual focused hatred, and prejudicial discrimination. The work encompasses analysis of philosophers and writers from ancient times through to the present day and examines such episodes as the Oklahoma City Federal Building bombing and the Columbine High School massacre.

Why, when we are desperately in love, do we endlessly block union with our love object? Why do we often destroy what we love most? Why do we search out the impossible object? Is it that we desire things because they are unavailable, and therefore, to keep desire alive, we need to prevent its fulfillment? Renata Salecl explores the distributing and complex relationships between love and hate, violence and admiration, libidinal and destructive drives, through an investigation of phenomenon as diverse as the novels The Age of Innocence and The Remains of the Day, classic Hollywood melodramas, the Sirens' song, Ceause?cu's Rumania and the Russian performance artist Oleg Kulik, who acts like a dog and bites his audience. (Per)Versions of Love and Hate presents a unique and timely intervention in contemporary debates by questioning the legitimacy of the calls for tolerance and respect by multiculturalism and exploring practices such as body-mutilation as symptoms of the radical change that has affected subjectivity in contemporary society.
