Written for all who are interested in the mechanics of humor, Sweet Madness presents a general discussion and introduction to the roles of paradox, metaphor, and fantasy in humor. The operation of the implicit and the unconscious in humor; the importance of humor to human life; and the development, from childhood on, of the sense of humor are discussed. The background for this serious study is drawn from such fields as psychiatry, psychology, anthropology, and sociology. William F. Fry, in this work, presents a new theory of the structure of humor based on the sometimes little understood psychological processes experienced by those who use humor or are exposed to humor. It is these relationships with other fields of study that allows for this investigation into the anatomy of humor. Fry, in this outstanding and erudite volume, takes a giant step in furthering our thinking about humor in transactional terms. Humor and a sense of humor are a vital part of human interactions, and as such, this book has much to contribute to the study of psychology, cultural, communications, and of coursehumor itself.

Lizzie, Andrew's younger daughter, was charged, but a jury took only 90 minutes to find her not guilty. Ever since her husband’s sudden and tragic death, Lady Penelope Bridgeman has committed herself to studying the maladies of the mind, particularly the trauma of soldiers of the Napoleonic Wars. It is this expertise that brings the Marquess of Bromwich’s family to her door. Gabriel Devereaux’s unexpected and unpredictable episodes are unlike any Penelope has studied. The once proud soldier has been left shaken and withdrawn, but Penelope manages to build a fragile trust between them. Strangely, Gabriel seems completely lucid when not in the grips of his mania, and during the calm bouts between, she is surprised by how much she is drawn to him. Despite his own growing feelings, Gabriel knows that he is fit for no one and is determined to keep Penelope away from his descent into madness. But even though she knows firsthand the folly of loving a broken man, Penelope cannot stop herself from trying to save him, no matter the cost.

This book is a distillation of thoughts and findings encountered in the process of working as Research Assistant in the Department of Anthropology at Stanford University. I was working in association with Gregory Bateson and the other members of our research staff in an exploration of the functions of the paradoxes of abstraction in implicit communication, humor, mental illness, psychotherapy, and culture. The, first part of the book, consisting of two chapters, serves mainly as a very general introduction to the subject of humor. The second part of the book is a group of four chapters which have little apparent interrelationship (except that they are all about humor in one way or another). Weakly related as they are, however, these chapters serve to introduce a variety of ideas important to the climax, and concluding part, of the book. This third part is divided into two closely connected chapters--one historical and the other expositive. These chapters are the real raison d'etre of the book and present the theory of the structure of humor that developed during my research studies mentioned above. Realizing the past will follow her wherever she goes... Tricia Langford finds the smallest of small southern towns to relocate for her fresh start. Working in a roadhouse on the edge of the swamp seems like a safer place to hide than where she'd been living. Discovering that the man she ran from has followed her to St. Denis parish rattles her newfound sense of security. Fearing she'll pull everyone around her into her trouble... R.J. Perot watches Tricia for days. He knows the look of a woman on the run. Hanging around her does more than further his investigation of her suspicious behavior. Her nearness does strange things to his heart, dredging up feelings he thought he'd long buried beneath a tough veneer of cynicism. Staying because sometimes the heart doesn't give you a choice... Their mutual interest in discovering the secrets of the past causes the curse of the Wakefields to cast its spell on Tricia and R.J. Together they struggle to disentangle their lives from the web of deceit that began over one hundred fifty years ago at Wakefield Manor. Can their love resist sweet madness when their hearts become entangled in the honeysuckle vine?
