Das Interesse und der industrielle Bedarf an hochporösen Keramiken ist in den letzten Jahrzehnten enorm gestiegen, eine Fortsetzung dieses Trends wird allgemein erwartet. Zellulare Keramiken finden heute vielfältig industrielle Anwendung. Neue Methoden ermöglichen die Herstellung zellularer Keramiken durch Direktaufschäumen von Silizium-basierten Polymeren. Das verwendete Polymer agiert dabei zweifach. Einerseits bilden sich in situ Treibgase, andererseits können diese Polymere durch Pyrolyse in Keramik umgewandelt werden. Das von Jürgen Reinhard Zeschky in seiner vorliegenden Studie vorgestellte Verfahren ermöglicht die Herstellung von Keramikschäumen mit homogener und gradierter Porenstruktur. Die grundlegenden Mechanismen der Schaumenstehung werden hier näher diskutiert. Die mechanischen, thermischen und elektrischen Eigenschaften der polymerabgeleiteten Keramikschäume lassen sich durch Füllerzugabe in weiten Bereichen steuern. Ein ausgezeichnetes Thermoschockverhalten, eine hohe mechanische Zuverlässigkeit und gute Hochtemperatureigenschaften zeichnen diese Schäume aus. Exemplarisch wird die Verwendung der Schaumkeramiken als Sandwichelement und als Verstärkungsphase von Leichtmetallen vorgestellt. Insbesondere die elastischen Konstanten und die Kriechrate im Temperaturbereich oberhalb von 100 °C konnten bei den Kompositen im Vergleich zu unverstärktem Magnesium signifikant gesteigert werden.
