In 1985 poet Ross Talarico began a grassroots program in creative expression in Rochester, New York. As the program came together, so did the community—young and old, poor and privileged, even those who could not read or write but wanted to tell their stories. This book is a testimony to the poetry that experience produced. An exhilarating account of a successful experiment in promoting community self-expression, Spreading the Word interweaves the participants’ stories with Talarico’s own life, his struggle as a poet, and the drama of his workshops. The book will be both a resource and an inspiration for teachers of writing, writers, and those who simply wish to learn to write. Drawing on his workshops in Rochester, Talarico describes a unique approach for eliciting poetry from people of many ages and backgrounds—particularly underpriviledged urban kids and the elderly. The process—from dialogue to self-expression to publication to public event—illuminates the urgency and meaning of releasing the spirit captured in each man and woman and child’s experience. "Some people say that Ross Talarico has done the impossible," the Today Show remarked of his success in Rochester; and with this book Talarico offers the same opportunity to others. Teachers, community leaders, parents, and children will be able to follow his practical, hands-on approach to encouraging self-expression in diverse, even unlikely, settings. They will see here how poetry is indeed relevant, ever more crucial to our identity as the culture evolves—how it is, finally, the place where the inarticulate can come to speak for themselves.

This document reviews the interim findings from Phase 1 of a Department for International Development (DFID) funded project (R7127) concerning the development of practical guidelines for research dissemination strategies. Results from a review of literature, case study analysis and interviews with key informants are discussed. The purpose of Phase 1 is to understand current thinking and approaches to dissemination of research as adopted by sector based agencies both in the UK and internationally. This facilitates an initial analysis of common dissemination strategies used, problems and constraints experienced, and factors that aid effective dissemination. This in turn is used to provide tentative guidance for research contractors and DFID alike for dissemination of projects.

Civil war, the completion of transcontinental railroads, rapid urbanization and industrialization, the rise of managerial capitalism, and new entanglements abroad rent the fabric of life in nineteenth-century America. Through all the turmoil, the American Bible Society thrived. This engaging book tells how a modest antebellum reform agency responded to cataclysmic social change and grew to be a nonprofit corporate bureaucracy that managed, among other projects, what was one of the largest publishing houses in the United States. Peter J. Wosh weaves a richly detailed narrative that places the Society's transformation within the cultural, racial, and religious landscape of its times. In the process, he offers keen insight into the processes of institutionalization, bureaucratization, professionalization, and community-building. Spreading the Word is also the story of people - from patrician New Yorkers who sat on the ABS governing board to shrewd young men-on-the-rise who served as Bible agents, from wealthy Quaker philanthropist Thomas Eddy, who conceived the ABS as part of a larger network of savings banks, penitentiaries, and other urban reforms, to poverty-stricken New Englander Simeon Calhoun, who discovered his mission in life selling Bibles and preaching salvation throughout Turkey and Lebanon. As Wosh journeys through venues as diverse as a clapboard Primitive Baptist meetinghouse in Kentucky and the spectacular five-story Bible House in New York City, he overturns traditional views of benevolence and reform. Drawing on the Society's previously unexplored archives and on other contemporary accounts, Wosh conveys the flavor - and the ironies - of organizational life. He illustrates how the ABS adapted its fund-raising strategies, financial structure, corporate organization, and technological infrastructure to meet rapidly changing national conditions, and he raises important questions about the nature of religion and reform in a market-oriented society.
