In this book, we study theoretical and practical aspects of computing methods for mathematical modelling of nonlinear systems. A number of computing techniques are considered, such as methods of operator approximation with any given accuracy; operator interpolation techniques including a non-Lagrange interpolation; methods of system representation subject to constraints associated with concepts of causality, memory and stationarity; methods of system representation with an accuracy that is the best within a given class of models; methods of covariance matrix estimation; methods for low-rank matrix approximations; hybrid methods based on a combination of iterative procedures and best operator approximation; and methods for information compression and filtering under condition that a filter model should satisfy restrictions associated with causality and different types of memory. As a result, the book represents a blend of new methods in general computational analysis, and specific, but also generic, techniques for study of systems theory ant its particular branches, such as optimal filtering and information compression. - Best operator approximation, - Non-Lagrange interpolation, - Generic Karhunen-Loeve transform - Generalised low-rank matrix approximation - Optimal data compression - Optimal nonlinear filtering

Nonlinear Phenomena in Mathematical Sciences contains the proceedings of an International Conference on Nonlinear Phenomena in Mathematical Sciences, held at the University of Texas at Arlington, on June 16-20,1980. The papers explore trends in nonlinear phenomena in mathematical sciences, with emphasis on nonlinear functional analytic methods and their applications; nonlinear wave theory; and applications to medical and life sciences. In the area of nonlinear functional analytic methods and their applications, the following subjects are discussed: optimal control theory; periodic oscillations of nonlinear mechanical systems; Leray-Schauder degree theory; differential inequalities applied to parabolic and elliptic partial differential equations; bifurcation theory, stability theory in analytical mechanics; singular and ordinary boundary value problems, etc. The following topics in nonlinear wave theory are considered: nonlinear wave propagation in a randomly homogeneous media; periodic solutions of a semilinear wave equation; asymptotic behavior of solutions of strongly damped nonlinear wave equations; shock waves and dissipation theoretical methods for a nonlinear Schr?dinger equation; and nonlinear hyperbolic Volterra equations occurring in viscoelasticity. Applications to medical and life sciences include mathematical modeling in physiology, pharmacokinetics, and neuro-mathematics, along with epidemic modeling and parameter estimation techniques. This book will be helpful to students, practitioners, and researchers in the field of mathematics.

Many important problems in applied sciences, mathematics, and engineering can be reduced to matrix problems. Moreover, various applications often introduce a special structure into the corresponding matrices, so that their entries can be described by a certain compact formula. Classic examples include Toeplitz matrices, Hankel matrices, Vandermonde matrices, Cauchy matrices, Pick matrices, Bezoutians, controllability and observability matrices, and others. Exploiting these and the more general structures often allows us to obtain elegant solutions to mathematical problems as well as to design more efficient practical algorithms for a variety of applied engineering problems. Structured matrices have been under close study for a long time and in quite diverse (and seemingly unrelated) areas, for example, mathematics, computer science, and engineering. Considerable progress has recently been made in all these areas, and especially in studying the relevant numerical and computational issues. In the past few years, a number of practical algorithms blending speed and accuracy have been developed. This significant growth is fully reflected in these volumes, which collect 38 papers devoted to the numerous aspects of the topic. The collection of the contributions to these volumes offers a flavor of the plethora of different approaches to attack structured matrix problems. The reader will find that the theory of structured matrices is positioned to bridge diverse applications in the sciences and engineering, deep mathematical theories, as well as computational and numerical issues. The presentation fully illustrates the fact that the techniques of engineers, mathematicians, and numerical analysts nicely complement each other, and they all contribute to one unified theory of structured matrices. The book is published in two volumes. The first contains articles on interpolation, system theory, signal and image processing, control theory, and spectral theory. Articles in the second volume are devoted to fast algorithms, numerical and iterative methods, and various applications.

This volume contains papers based on some of the talks given at the NSF-CBMS conference on ``The Geometrical Study of Differential Equations'' held at Howard University (Washington, DC). The collected papers present important recent developments in this area, including the treatment of nontransversal group actions in the theory of group invariant solutions of PDEs, a method for obtaining discrete symmetries of differential equations, the establishment of a group-invariant version of the variational complex based on a general moving frame construction, the introduction of a new variational complex for the calculus of difference equations and an original structural investigation of Lie-Backlund transformations. The book opens with a modern and illuminating overview of Lie's line-sphere correspondence and concludes with several interesting open problems arising from symmetry analysis of PDEs. It offers a rich source of inspiration for new or established researchers in the field. This book can serve nicely as a companion volume to Selected Topics in the Geometrical Study of Differential Equations, by Niky Kamran, in the AMS series, CBMS Regional Conference Series in Mathematics.

This work discusses the theory of control processes. The extremely rapid growth of the theory, associated intimately with the continuing trend toward automation, makes it imperative that the courses of this nature rest upon a broad basis. The work discusses the fundamentals of the calculus of variations, dynamic programming, discrete control processes, use of the digital computer, and functional analysis. Introductory courses in control theory are essential for training the modern graduate student in pure and applied mathematics, engineering, mathematical physics, economics, biology, operations research, and related fields. The work also describes the dual approaches of the calculus of variations and dynamic programming in the scalar case and illustrates ways to tackle the multidimensional optimization problems.
