Although informatics trainees and practitioners who assume operational computing roles in their organization may have reasonably advanced understanding of theoretical informatics, many are unfamiliar with the practical topics - such as downtime procedures, interface engines, user support, JCAHO compliance, and budgets - which will become the mainstay of their working lives. Practical Guide to Clinical Computing Systems 2nd edition helps prepare these individuals for the electronic age of health care delivery. It is also designed for those who migrate into clinical computing operations roles from within their health care organization. A new group of people interested in this book are those preparing for Clinical Informatics board certification in the US. The work provides particular differentiation from the popular first edition in four areas: 40% more content detailing the many practical aspects of clinical informatics. Addresses the specific needs of the Clinical Informatics board certification course – for which it is presently recommended by the ABPM Focus on new tech paradigms including cloud computing and concurrency – for this rapidly changing field. Focuses on the practical aspects of operating clinical computing systems in medical centers rather than abstruse theory. Provides deepened and broadened authorship with a global panel of contributors providing new wisdom and new perspectives - reflecting inclusion of the first edition on the clinical informatics study guide materials. Presents a practical treatment of workday but often unfamiliar issues – downtime procedures, interface engines, user support, JCAHO compliance, and budgets.

Designing Healthcare That Works: A Sociotechnical Approach takes up the pragmatic, messy problems of designing and implementing sociotechnical solutions which integrate organizational and technical systems for the benefit of human health. The book helps practitioners apply principles of sociotechnical design in healthcare and consider the adoption of new theories of change. As practitioners need new processes and tools to create a more systematic alignment between technical mechanisms and social structures in healthcare, the book helps readers recognize the requirements of this alignment. The systematic understanding developed within the book’s case studies includes new ways of designing and adopting sociotechnical systems in healthcare. For example, helping practitioners examine the role of exogenous factors, like CMS Systems in the U.S. Or, more globally, helping practitioners consider systems external to the boundaries drawn around a particular healthcare IT system is one key to understand the design challenge. Written by scholars in the realm of sociotechnical systems research, the book is a valuable source for medical informatics professionals, software designers and any healthcare providers who are interested in making changes in the design of the systems. Encompasses case studies focusing on specific projects and covering an entire lifecycle of sociotechnical design in healthcare Provides an in-depth view from established scholars in the realm of sociotechnical systems research and related domains Brings a systematic understanding that includes ways of designing and adopting sociotechnical systems in healthcare

The Curse is a tale of horror and suspense. It tells the story of a group of common people fleeing from their daunting past, and their struggle for survival. It shows how man's evil transgression and guilty conscience will literally follow him to his death, and perhaps even cause it. It also tells of how one man's fault could not only lead to his suffering, but also to those he holds dear. The tale begins when a group of six daring, young teenage boys plan an upcoming Halloween prank. The mastermind of the six, Jack Boomer, decides to try something different and more dangerous than the previous years. He plans to blow up the shack with a pile of firecrackers. Four of his cronies immediately agree with his plan; however, Ted Dot, the pessimistic, redheaded teenager, is reluctant. He tries to explain to them the consequences of being caught. The other five are not dissuaded from the idea, and they somehow talk Ted into going along with them. Once all six confirm their new idea, they gather their materials. On Halloween night, they set out to execute their plan. Everything works out perfectly for them, and the shack soon erupts into a blazing fury. Their celebration is short-lived, though. From out of the forest appears a mysterious old woman. Her ethnicity is unknown, her origin is unknown, why she is bald, wears a polka-dotted skullcap, wraps her feet in construction paper for shoes, and wears a mud-stained, dark brown dress is all unknown, and it remains unknown throughout the story. The entire time she is simply referred to as the "old woman." In her hand she carries a long, gnarled staff the most significant figure in the entire piece. This stranger claims that the destroyed shack was her home, and she doesn't give the six teenagers a chance to explain. She unleashes her fury and invokes a horrible curse upon them. From then on, it is the ultimate survival story for the six boys. Not only do they suffer the consequences, but also their family members and other best friends are part of the ordeal. And, the "old woman" claims, the terrible conflict does not cease until all six of them have been wiped out.
