Author Sammy Lee Gott was one of four boys in a dysfunctional family, raised by alcoholics. Despite this difficult beginning, he survived and prospered. In Poetry of a Dysfunctional Family, Gott—with his brother Gerald—shares through his recollections and poetry an understanding of some of the factors that make a family dysfunctional and explores ways to break the generational cycle of abuse. He believes understanding is the key—knowing that the pain and stress from the abuse of childhood lasts far into adulthood and that God is the key ingredient needed to recovery. In these verses, Gott puts into words what needed to be said when he could not find the courage to speak. He also tells the love story that arose between an abused man and the woman who worked to understand and help heal him. In this collection, one man recalls his dysfunctional family and abusive childhood in prose and poetry, knowing that the healing process begins with love and ends with forgiveness.

Family is the one thing we all know about - whether family gives you strength, or breaks your heart, whether your idea of family stays steadfast through generations, or whether your family is a million miles away from kids or rosy-cheeked grannies. This book helps us think about and celebrate family moments and family members. The contents ranges from Robert Burns to Liz Lochhead, from happy babies to the death of a father. It is the fourth in the series of anthologies which provide words for important occasions ("Handfast", "Handsel" and "Lament", also published by Polygon and the Scottish Poetry Library).

Approach these poems as short stories, plainspoken lyric essays, controlled arcs of a bildungsroman, then again as narrative verse. Tap Out, Edgar Kunz’s debut collection, reckons with his working‐poor heritage. Within are poignant, troubling portraits of blue‐collar lives, mental health in contemporary America, and what is conveyed and passed on through touch and words―violent, or simply absent. Yet Kunz’s verses are unsentimental, visceral, sprawling between oxys and Bitcoin, crossing the country restlessly. They grapple with the shame and guilt of choosing to leave the culture Kunz was born and raised in, the identity crises caused by class mobility. They pull the reader close, alternating fierce whispers and proud shouts about what working hands are capable of and the different ways a mind and body can leave a life they can no longer endure. This hungry new voice asks: after you make the choice to leave, what is left behind, what can you make of it, and at what cost?

My poetry can best be described as a personal journey lived through depression. From childhood through adulthood I have existed with depression. I have always enjoyed reading and so with reading, the idea of writing poetry came to mind. Being able to express my emotions has played a big part on my road to recovery. Seeing people like myself has helped me give more understanding of how depression affects the mind. Through my poetry I have been able to talk of these emotions through faith in others who have helped me and through my faith in God who has never left me. I try to end my poetry not in negativity but with a purposeful emotion that will give the reader hope, a hope that he or she will someday reach, that pinnacle in their lives that will help them to see beyond that hopelessness of depression. Forty chapters, written by leading scholars across the world, describe the latest thinking on modern Irish poetry. The Handbook begins with a consideration of Yeats's early work, and the legacy of the 19th century. The broadly chronological areas which follow, covering the period from the 1910s through to the 21st century, allow scope for coverage of key poetic voices in Ireland in their historical and political context. From the experimentalism of Beckett, MacGreevy, and others of the modernist generation, to the refashioning of Yeats's Ireland on the part of poets such as MacNeice, Kavanagh, and Clarke mid-century, through to the controversially titled post-1969 'Northern Renaissance' of poetry, this volume will provide extensive coverage of the key movements of the modern period. The Handbook covers the work of, among others, Paul Durcan, Thomas Kinsella, Brendan Kennelly, Seamus Heaney, Paul Muldoon, Michael Longley, Medbh McGuckian, and Ciaran Carson. The thematic sections interspersed throughout - chapters on women's poetry, religion, translation, painting, music, stylistics - allow for comparative studies of poets north and south across the century. Central to the guiding spirit of this project is the Handbook's consideration of poetic forms, and a number of essays explore the generic diversity of poetry in Ireland, its various manipulations, reinventions and sometimes repudiations of traditional forms. The last essays in the book examine the work of a 'new' generation of poets from Ireland, concentrating on work published in the last two decades by Justin Quinn, Leontia Flynn, Sinead Morrissey, David Wheatley, Vona Groarke, and others.

My Book of Urban Poetry showcases the different types of poems written by Brian Black Cowboy Montgomery. In his new book, the author has separated his poetry into three different sections. The first part, The Romantic Side of B, delivers some truly erotic prose. For the Hero Within Us features inspirational poems, while the final section, Welcome to the Dark Side, delves into Montgomery's dark and brooding verse. I credit my supportive and loving girlfriend, Latasha, and my dysfunctional family for providing me my inspiration for my poems, he says. Looks like I have a good, bad and ugly thing going on, but I like it because I want the readers to understand what they're reading and the meaning behind my pieces. For the good, the bad and the ugly, check out the symbolic and versatile verses that constitute the Black Cowboy's sweet and dark pieces.
