An attorney argues the inspired New Testament consists of Jesus' words only. Paul's status is questioned. First, Paul never made a valid prophecy. Second, Paul must be rejected under Deut. 13:5 because he taught the Law of Moses was nullified. Lastly, Jesus most likely intended we understand Paul was the person in Rev. 2:2 whom the Ephesians put on trial and proved was a false apostle. This Ephesus trial is alluded to in Acts ch. 19. Paul refers to it several times as well.

Reports of dreams, journeys into the heavens, and other alternate states of consciousness abound in the Old and New Testaments and in extrabiblical literature. While some scholars have considered such reports to be simple literary devices, John J. Pilch a leading expert in social scientific interpretation of the Bible believes otherwise. As Pilch points out, anthropological research on over 400 representative cultures in the world shows that more than ninety percent of these cultures have reported such experiences routinely. Factual or not, he says, biblical accounts of alternate consciousness are both plausible and significant because they constitute a very common, real, human experience in their respective cultures. Drawing on insights from from anthropology, cognitive neuroscience, psychology, and the social sciences, Pilch investigates and interprets Old and New Testament accounts of dreams, visions, journeys into the heavens, and other alternate states of consciousness within their cultural contexts. The result is a fresh and intriguing take on familiar biblical events. Flights of the Soul sheds new light on such things as these: * Ezekiel s prophetic visions * Enoch s sky journeys * Jesus transfiguration and ascension * Resurrection appearances in the Gospels * Paul s ecstatic vision on the road to Damascus * John s heavenly journeys described in Revelation

What is grace? And more important, what difference do the "comfortable words" of grace make in the lives of everyday people? These are the questions to which Paul F. M. Zahl has devoted his life, and this book is a collection of essays written in honor of him that seeks to answer these great questions. From literary theory to exegesis to systematic theology, these essays are representative of the breadth and depth of the influence Dr. Zahl has had on a variety of scholars, and reflect his emphasis on the relationship between theology as an academic discipline and the pastoral impact of "one-way love" on everyday people. Contributors include: C. FitzSimons Allison, Todd Brewer, George Carey, James D. G. Dunn, Susan G. Eastman, Mark Mattes, Geiko Muller-Farenholz, Justin S. Holcomb, John D. Koch Jr., Lauren Larkin, Jonathan A. Linebaugh, Jurgen Moltmann, Heinz-Dieter Neef, J. Ashley Null, Raymond C. Ortlund Jr., Dylan D. Potter, Justyn Terry, Tullian Tchividjian, Jonathan K. M. Ekkehard W. Stegemann legt seit Jahrzehnten den Romerbrief aus.

In the living room were gathered my four sisters Elise, Jeanette, Nita, Rosemary, and me (Keller Paul Madere) along with my wife Carolyn and Charles Stalfort, Nita's husband. After a lot of chit chat back and forth reminiscing about old family stories and happenings, Charles (or Chuck as we know him) brought out his tape recorder. Quizzically, he posed this simple question, "What can you tell me about Papa?" He was referring to our father, Ernest Hubert Madere. With feelings of unified dismay, none of the five of us were able to provide Chuck with any new information about Papa other than what he already knew. Consequently, in order for the children of Carolyn and me, namely Joni, Colin, and Lana, to have some inkling regarding where I lived, what I did, and get a glimpse into my psyche before they were born and then grew up knowing me, this tome will provide some insight. Our children will have historical and genealogical information concerning their ancestry in words, pictures, and other relative and associated odds and ends. Nowadays, family members tend to get scattered hither and yon. Children often get permanently displaced regarding their backgrounds and family records. Items like birth certificates, report cards, names of first and second cousins, aunts, uncles, close friends, associates, and similar pertinent items gets lost in the shuffle as time steadily marches on. Hopefully, this ponderous volume will soothe many misgivings our children may have about who they are, the backgrounds of their ancestors, and precisely where they came from. Amen!

The Bible has long served as the standard for Christian practice, yet believers still disagree on how biblical passages should be interpreted and applied. Only when readers fully understand the constructs that inform their process of moving from Scripture to theology—and those of others—can Christians fully evaluate teachings that claim to be “biblical.” Here, scholars who affirm an inspired Bible, relevant and authoritative for every era, present models they consider most faithful to Scripture: - Walter C. Kaiser, Jr.: A Principlizing Model - Daniel M. Doriani: A Redemptive-Historical Model - Kevin J. Vanhoozer: A Drama-of-Redemption Model - William J. Webb: A Redemptive-Movement Model Each position also receives critiques from the proponents of the other views. Moreover, due to the far-reaching implications this topic holds for biblical studies, theology, and church teaching, this book includes three additional reflections by Christopher J. H. Wright, Mark L. Strauss, and Al Wolters on the theological and practical interpretation of biblical texts. Four Views on Moving beyond the Bible to Theology empowers readers to identify, evaluate, and refine their own approach to moving from the Bible to theology.

This important new book covers the time between Paul's conversion in Damascus and his arrival in Antioch, set against a detailed background of the early Christian world, the church in Damascus to which Paul was introduced on his conversion, the methods of the first Christian mission, the situation in Arabia during Paul's first mission, the mission territory in Tarsus and Cilicia to which he then moved, and the nature of the church in Antioch. Martin Hengel once more challenges the overly skeptical assessments of the New Testament record and provides powerful support for his position on Paul.
