This volume presents current research findings on vital issues in language development compiled by an international group of leading researchers. The data are drawn from studies of the acquisition of Swedish, Polish, Serbo-Croatian, Hungarian, Portuguese, Italian, and English. Themes emphasized in all the chapters include the importance of the social context of acquisition, the existence of interconnections among various domains of language development, and the impossibility of understanding acquisition using a simple theory or a single methodological approach.

What happens to children with psychiatric disorders as they mature? Many children experience attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder, depression, suicidal behavior, anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, and conduct disorder. Long-term outcome of childhood disorders is becoming increasingly more important as clinicians, teachers, and parents take a broader, more comprehensive view of childhood disorders, their natural history, their developmental impact, later adolescent and adult functioning, and their possible multigenerational consequences. Developmental factors pertaining to the child, such as the age at onset and severity of the disorder, other comorbid conditions, the child's sex and IQ, and physical or neurological health, all seem important in influencing outcome. In addition, social factors, such as socioeconomic status, family composition, mental health of parents, family functioning, and child-rearing practices seem to affect outcome. Finally, the impact of treatment is also crucial because it provides a picture of long-term efficacy of various approaches. Do They Grow Out of It? Long-Term Outcomes of Childhood Disorders is a comprehensive review of this important area that familiarizes clinicians and others about long-term outcomes of childhood disorders. This book will guide their present interventions, which will improve long-term outcome in the future. Each chapter is written by a professional with expertise in both the disorder and its long-term sequelae. The authors critically review available information on long-term outcome of the particular childhood disorder; what factors, particularly treatments, influence this outcome; and what future research or clinical directions appear promising.

Several books chronicle attempts, most of them during the last 40 years, to teach animals to communicate with people in a human-designed language. These books have typically treated only one or two species, or even one or a few research projects. We have provided a more encompassing view of this field. We also want to reinforce what other authors, for example Jane Goodall, Sue Savage-Rumbaugh, Penny Patterson, Birute Galdikas, and Roger and Deborah Fouts, so passionately convey about our responsibility for our closest animal kin. This book surveys what was known, or believed about animal language throughout history and prehistory, and summarizes current knowledge and the controversy around it. The authors identify and attempt to settle most of the problems in interpreting the animal behaviours that have been observed in studies of animal language ability.

When I approached the Golden Egg and I was about 5 feet from the egg I was told to stop, and stand still. Looking around me I was surprised to see, all the other Dragons had made a circle around me, at a distance of about 30 feet away from where I stood. I looked at the Golden Egg that was in soft warm sand, in front of me. Then I could see that it was gently rocking from side to side, and then I noted that tiny cracks appeared, they gradually got bigger as the Golden Egg continued to rock. I heard a tapping sound coming from the Golden Egg, there was no other sound in the warm still air, I could hear my heart beating in my breast, I thought that it sounded quite loud to me and I hope that I was the only one who could hear my heart beating. I then realized that my heart beat and the tapping sound that came from the Golden egg were the same rhythm. With breathless anticipation I watched the Golden Egg’s cracks become a small hole at first, and then much bigger, soon a tiny Golden Dragon was nearly fully exposed. With one final push a Beautiful Golden Little Dragon cast her eyes on me. She looked intently at me for what seemed to be a life time, but it was really only one minute, she took her first step then the second towards me on wobbly legs. Step by shaky unsteady step this little baby dragon came to me, when she was close to me she lifted her Golden head and glared at me intently, with her big brown eyes. Pleading for me to accept her, and to pat her on her Golden Head. I looked at her and my heart melted; I knew that I would love her and protect her until my life ended. I stroked her head very gently then I held her close to me in a gentle hug as a mother would her new born child.
