First published in 1984, Limit Analysis and Concrete Plasticity explains for advanced design engineers the principles of plasticity theory and its application to the design of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures, providing a thorough understanding of the subject, rather than simply applying current design formulas. Updated and revised throughout, Limit Analysis and Concrete Plasticity, Third Edition adds— Reinforcement design formulas for three-dimensional stress fields that enable design of solid structures (also suitable for implementation in computer-based lower bound optimizations) Improved explanations of the crack sliding theory and new solutions for beams with arbitrary curved shear cracks, continuous beams, lightly shear reinforced beams and beams with large axial compression More accurate treatment of and solutions for beams with circular cross-section Applications of crack sliding theory to punching shear problems New solutions that illustrate the implication of initial cracking on load-carrying capacity of disks Yield condition for the limiting case of isotropically cracked disk The authors also devote an entirely new chapter to a recently developed theory of rigid-plastic dynamics for seismic design of concrete structures. In comparison with time-history analyses, the new theory is simpler to use and leads to large material savings. With this chapter, plasticity design methods for both statical and dynamical loads are now covered by the book.

An extensive review of the theory of plasticity, limit design and limit analysis of plates is contained in this volume. Detailed descriptions are given on the plastic behaviour of homogeneous, reinforced and sandwich plates, and on the rise of various yield-line patterns. The volume differs from other books on the plastic analysis of plates by its comprehensive treatment of: the theory of yield fans connected with yield-line planning; the plastic behaviour of plates under combined loadings characterized by the load factors; statical solutions; and continuous, rectangular and skew plates. Before discussing the upper-bound solutions for various types of ultimate loads acting on isotropic, orthotropic and anisotropic plates, the kinematic conditions of the plastic behaviour of plates and the principles and methods of the yield-line theory are examined in detail. Generalized yield conditions of the second degree for orthotropic and anisotropic plates are introduced. Special attention is paid to the rise of yield fans. The concept of yield line planning is also discussed, which may be of practical interest since it indicates the possibilities for preventing the rise of yield fans. Upper-bound and lower-bound solutions for the ultimate uniform load, concentrated loads, triangular and trapexoidal loads, are presented. Similar solutions are provided for continuous loads bounded by various plane and curved surfaces and for various combinations of loads acting on rectangular, polygonal, circular, elliptic and skew plates. Solutions are given for plates on hinged supports, on free supports with elevating corners, on point supports and also for plates with built-in edges. Numerical tables are provided for determining the ultimate loads, bearing moments needed for the given load systems and the parameters of yield-line patterns. The procedures detailed in the volume will prove an indispensable reference source in the practical design of roof, ceiling and bridge slabs.

This revised and updated edition of a book first published in 1972 has kept the general features of the first edition but as could be expected after two decades there are also substantial differences. For instance optimal design has been completely deleted as the developments in this field have been so great that it warrants a book in itself. The fundamental concepts based on Drucker's postulate rather than those of Prager's assumptions function have been introduced. Problems of cyclic loading have been given some more extensive treatment, both in the general theory and in applications. General indications and references have been added for reinforced concrete plates and shells. A general presentation of the yield condition for both plates and shells has been included and the section on the influence of axial force in plates has been almost re-written. Finally, a chapter has been added exclusively devoted to the numerical approach to limit load and shake-down load evaluation. Like the previous edition the book is directed towards engineering applications. The theory is rigorously developed and is therefore of great use to engineering students in plastic limit analysis. Furthermore, applications to metal and reinforced concrete plates and shells and to metal disks are treated by both analytical and numerical approaches.

This fourth edition of a bestselling textbook has been extensively rewritten and expanded in line with the current Eurocodes. It presents the principles of the design of concrete elements and of complete structures, with practical illustrations of the theory. It explains the background to the Eurocode rules and goes beyond the core topics to cover the design of foundations, retaining walls, and water retaining structures. The text includes more than sixty worked out design examples and more than six hundred diagrams, plans, and charts. It suitable for civil engineering courses and is a useful reference for practicing engineers.

As mankind continues to push back the boundaries and begins to explore other worlds and the ocean depths, a thorough understanding of how structures behave when subjected to extremes in temperature, pressure, and high loading rates will be essential. This symposium provided the perfect forum for presenting research into structures subjected to such extreme loads. There were a large number of papers presented under topics of impact, blast and shock loading, indicating a strong research interest in high rates of loading. Similarly new topics have been added to the traditional symposium list such as fire loading, earthquake loading, and fatigue and connection failures. It is clear now that fundamental knowledge of plastic deformation of structures to various extreme loads is coming of age. Each full paper was peer reviewed by at least two experts in the field.

Providing a comprehensive overview of the techniques involved in testing concrete in structures, Testing of Concrete in Structures discusses both established techniques and new methods, showing potential for future development, and documenting them with illustrative examples. Topics have been expanded where significant advances have taken place in the field, for example integrity assessment, sub-surface radar, corrosion assessment and localized dynamic response tests. This fourth edition also covers the new trends in equipment and procedures, such as the continuation of general moves to automate test methods and developments in digital technology and the growing importance of performance monitoring, and includes new and updated references to standards. The non-specialist civil engineer involved in assessment, repair or maintenance of concrete structures will find this a thorough update.
