This document presents the proceedings of the Reinvention Center's second major conference, "Integrating Research into Undergraduate Education: The Value Added," co-sponsored by the National Science Foundation and the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation. The goal of the conference was to distill the distinct characteristics of the educational experience research universities can offer and to articulate the "value added" of such an experience to undergraduates so that it is readily comprehended. The conference was organized around three plenary sessions, each of which probed an aspect of the overall theme. These sessions were followed by meetings in which small groups examined issues raised by the speakers from institutional and disciplinary perspectives. Some of the questions probed at the conference included: (1) Based on their singular assets, what is the unique educational experience research universities can offer? (2) How can universities integrate their dual missions of "knowledge creation" and "knowledge transmission" in order to enrich and give new meaning to their undergraduate programs? and (3) How can research universities communicate the value of a research-infused education to their diverse constituencies?
