The publication of this Second Edition, twelve years after the first, attests to the timelessness of the techniques used in experimental work with the rat. However, scientific progress inevitably brings to light new ideas and procedures. In particular, considerable progress has been made in the use of new anesthetics and analgesics. A completely new chapter has been written on these with unique emphasis on the applicability to the rat. The very variable standards of surgery that existed in the past are placed in perspective in another new chapter, which makes recommendations more in keeping with the higher standards now demanded of animal experimentation. A variety of new techniques have been added throughout to expand the usefulness of the book, and more illustrations have been added to help in the execution of the various procedures. One of the greatest advances in the last twelve years is a greater appreciation for the well-being of experimental animals, and references to a more humane and refined approach have been made throughout this edition. This greater awareness of welfare issues demands that experimental animals be handled and used correctly and compassionately, with as little suffering as possible, and has led to a marked improvement in the attitude to proper training. This book is still the only source which provides a detailed and up-to-date compilation of illustrated experimental methods for work with the rat. It will continue to be an invaluable reference to specific information for laboratory workers and will help considerably in training new investigators in the proper and considerate use of this species. Key Features * All surgical techniques have been revised and updated * A new section on anesthesia and post-operative care has been included * Presents new techniques, particularly cannulation

An All-Inclusive Guide to Surgical Techniques on Rats The design of an adequate surgical model, like the choice of the animal model itself, is extremely important for obtaining reliable valuable data. Experimental Surgical Models in the Laboratory Rat summarizes a series of techniques that were applied in the Bone Biology Laboratories, School of Medicine, Rosario National University, Argentina. Stopping just short of an exhaustive analysis of the techniques, this manual describes the basics of each surgical technique, the necessary materials, precautions to consider, the methodology to apply, and the possible results to be obtained in similar experiments. CD-ROM: 250 Illustrations of Surgery Techniques with Step-by-Step Instruction With succinct descriptions, color photographs, and easy-to-follow steps, the attached CD-ROM is a practical, full-color roadmap for performing various surgery techniques, such as catheterization, tracheostomy, intramuscular injection, subcutaneous injection, intraperitoneal injection, and oral intubation. This definitive work provides technical and practical data including volumes and concentrations of solutions, catheters used, equipment, and biological variables on the rat. Experimental Surgical Models in the Laboratory Rat is a complete reference for today’s biomedical sciences investigator.

The aim of the book is to describe tested microsurgical procedures of kidney, pancreas, islets, heat, liver and small bowel transplantation. All procedures written in the book are used in our experimental research laboratory and their description will be provided by an experienced researcher. The book is organized into ‘General’ and ‘Specific’ sections. The ‘General’ section will include principles, doses and available drugs for rat anaesthesia, the surgical anatomy of the rat, a brief review of immunosuppressant’s used in rat models, a description of basic surgical techniques and blood sampling. The ‘Specific’ section will include a description of the rat model with the appropriate organ failure relevant to the organ transplantation, which will be followed by a detailed description of the surgical procedure with high quality pictures of key steps. Each chapter will describe ‘tips and tricks’ including practical advice and recommendations.

Preclinical experimental transplantation research that is based on microsurgical models in rats fulfills two indispensable conditions for modern organ transplanta tion research: Almost all organ grafts can be performed on the rat with an amount of technical effort that is still justifiable. Thus transplantation models that are analogous to human organ transplantation can be developed, tested, and evaluated. This fulfills a necessary condition from the standpoint of surgery. With the species rat, we have a great variety of genetically different inbred strains. From the immunological point of view this is an indispensable prerequisite for the investigation of preclinical transplantation models that can be expected to produce controllable, reproducible results. In vivo experimental results can be supplemented by and correlated to in vitro tests. Lately these experimental results are being greatly expanded and more precisely defined by the application of immunohistological methods that have been established recently in Kiel. In this book we hope to present a cross section of the microsurgical models in use today and of current immunological and immunohistological models. Furthermore, we wish to record the present state of microsurgical organ transplantation research and to show its relationship to the current state and development of clinical organ transplantation. A special aspect of our Kiel research group is the long-term, well-functioning, interdisciplinary cooperation between surgery, immunology, and pathology. Through this cooperation we attempt to provide an atmosphere in which theoretical and practical viewpoints can mutually influence each other.
