"Through an analysis of popular imagery, exotic fiction, travel writing, and other cultural texts, Berliner shows how the representation and reception of blacks in post-World War I France embodied competing, at times contradictory, perceptions. On the one hand, African and Caribbean blacks were depicted as a source of cultural renewal and a means for celebrating life and sexuality. On the other hand, interracial relationships were seen as a threat to French civilization, a notion reinforced by grotesque advertisements, ethnographic exhibitions, and other aesthetically repulsive images of "primitive" blacks."--BOOK JACKET.

Jennifer Anna Gosetti-Ferencei presents striking new interpretations of the exotic in major German writers such as Kafka, Mann, Zweig, Hofmannsthal, Brecht, and Hesse, along with Nietzsche, Freud, Simmel, and Expressionist aesthetics. She shows how the category and evocation of the exotic, and in particular the depiction of exotic spaces and places, serves to reflect on central problems of European modernity and the modern self. Exotic spaces are not only posedin radical contrast to the modern experience, but also serve to reconfigure, expose, and challenge the assumptions, practices, and metaphysics of modernity itself.

This early work by Elinor Glyn was originally published in 1907 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Three Things' is a great work of romantic fiction by the author of 'Three Weeks'. She was the youngest daughter of a civil engineer, Douglas Southerland, and his wife Elinor Saunders. Elinor Glyn began her writing career in 1900 and was a pioneer of the risqué and romantic fiction genre. She went on to write many popular books such as 'Beyond the Rocks' (1906), 'Love's Blindness' (1926), and 'It' (1927), in which she coined the term 'It', meaning the animal magnetism that some individuals possess.

Orientalism refers to the imitation of aspects of Eastern cultures in the West, and was devised in order to have authority over the Orient. The concept of Re-Orientalism maintains the divide between the Orient and the West. However, where Orientalism is based on how the West constructs the East, Re-Orientalism is grounded on how the cultural East comes to terms with an orientalised East. This book explores various new forms, objects and modes of circulation that sustain this renovated form of Orientalism in South Asian culture. The contributors identify and engage with recent debates about postcolonial South Asian identity politics, discussing a range of different texts and films such as The White Tiger, Bride & Prejudice and Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love. Providing new theoretical insights from the areas of literature, film studies and cultural and discourse analysis, this book is an stimulating read for students and scholars interested in South Asian culture, postcolonial studies and identity politics.

This book focuses on the oeuvre of nineteenth-century author and naval captain Julien Viaud (1850-1923) who wrote under the pseudonym Pierre Loti. Considered a best-seller in his day and a distinguished naval figure, Loti's contribution to French naval and literary history is significant. This work suggests a new reading of Loti's literature that positions his texts within the critical theoretical paradigms of Postcolonialism and Queer Theory. This study examines both Loti's fictional and non-fictional opus. It explores the dominant themes relayed throughout his oeuvre including his portrayal of exotic sexuality as being underpinned by a desire to elude articulation, his uncertain approach to colonialism given the constant shift between his identity as a colonising sailor and sympathising exoticist and Loti's own self-representation in both his fictional and non-fictional works. His constant re-invention of -Pierre Loti- as a persona in his writing creates a question about who Loti really is and how much of the man is represented in the so-called autobiographical text. These seemingly disparate themes of sexuality, colonialism and personal identity are all interrogated as posssible sites of ambiguity, thus revealing the general scope and complexity of Loti's work."
