"Crime, disorder, and decay symbolize the decline of America's inner cities. Skogan's book is theoretically acute, methodologically sophisticated, and politically astute. It should be required reading for every urban sociologist, policy planner, and public official."--Jerome H. Skolnick, University of California, Berkeley "Panhandling, graffiti, prostitution, abandoned cars and buildings, and junk-filled lots are evidence of neighborhood disorder and decline. In this absorbing and valuable study, Skogan discusses the implications of disorder and skillfully analyzes experimental efforts undertaken to confront it in several American cities."--Gilbert Geis, University of California, Irvine "This timely book not only documents the relationship between disorder and neighborhood decline, but provides a cogent analysis of the currently favored solutions to problems such as community policing and citizen self-help."--Dr. Thomas A. Reppetto, President, Citizens Crime Commission of New York City

The political and economic crises that rage around the world cannot be attributed to simply a “great recession” The global system is in a deep crisis that has appeared historically again and again. David Ranney lays out the source of this “new world disorder” and explains its historical precedents. He then raises critical questions about the future. Players around the world are lining up to knock the U.S. out of its self-proclaimed position as “the most powerful nation on earth.” What are some possible outcomes? Are we doomed to live through a long period of narrow political bickering, a deteriorating environment, declining living standards, permanent war, and government surveillance? Will super global corporations enforce a new and possibly brutal form of capitalism that is removed from the reach of any particular government? Will we see the frightening emergence of 21st Century fascism? Or will we find a way toward a global system based on liberty, equality and environmental sustainability that aims to meet the needs of humanity and the planet?

Neuronal and Synaptic Dysfunction in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Intellectual Disability provides the latest information on Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), the lifelong neurodevelopmental disorders that present in early childhood and affect how individuals communicate and relate to others and their surroundings. In addition, three quarters of ASD patients also manifest severe intellectual disability. Though certain genes have been implicated, ASDs remain largely a mystery, and research looking into causes and cellular deficits are crucial for better understanding of neurodevelopmental disorders. Despite the prevalence and insidious nature of this disorder, this book remains to be an extensive resource of information and background on the state of current research in the field. The book serves as a reference for this purpose, and discusses the crucial role synaptic activity plays in proper brain function. In addition, the volume discusses the neurodevelopmental synaptopathies and serves as a resource for scientists and clinicians in all biomedical science specialties. This research has been crucial for recent studies that have provided a rationale for the development of pharmacological agents able to counteract functional synaptic anomalies and potentially ameliorate some ASD symptoms. Introduces the genetic and non-genetic causes of autism and associated intellectual disabilities Describes the genes implicated in autistic spectrum disorders and their function Considers major individual genetic causes of autism, Rett syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, and other autism spectrum disorders, as well as their classification as synaptopathies Presents a thorough discussion of the clinical aspects of multiple neurodevelopmental disorders and the experimental models that exist to study their pathophysiology in vitro and in vivo, including animal models and patient-derived stem cell culture

The Real Cost of Insecure Software • In 1996, software defects in a Boeing 757 caused a crash that killed 70 people… • In 2003, a software vulnerability helped cause the largest U.S. power outage in decades… • In 2004, known software weaknesses let a hacker invade T-Mobile, capturing everything from passwords to Paris Hilton’s photos… • In 2005, 23,900 Toyota Priuses were recalled for software errors that could cause the cars to shut down at highway speeds… • In 2006 dubbed “The Year of Cybercrime,” 7,000 software vulnerabilities were discovered that hackers could use to access private information… • In 2007, operatives in two nations brazenly exploited software vulnerabilities to cripple the infrastructure and steal trade secrets from other sovereign nations… Software has become crucial to the very survival of civilization. But badly written, insecure software is hurting people–and costing businesses and individuals billions of dollars every year. This must change. In Geekonomics, David Rice shows how we can change it. Rice reveals why the software industry is rewarded for carelessness, and how we can revamp the industry’s incentives to get the reliability and security we desperately need and deserve. You’ll discover why the software industry still has shockingly little accountability–and what we must do to fix that. Brilliantly written, utterly compelling, and thoroughly realistic, Geekonomics is a long-overdue call to arms. Whether you’re software user, decision maker, employee, or business owner this book will change your life…or even save it.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries revolutionary dissent, political upheaval and social protest spread throughout Europe - and Wales was no exception. In this unique examination of British social history, J. E. Thomas focuses upon the power of the local gentry in Wales, and their relationship with the poor and potentially revolutionary population. Early explosions of protest were seen all over Wales, coinciding with the aftermath of the American Revolution, and the equally seismic events of the French Revolution. Thomas here analyses the importance of the intellectual ideas and political imagination of the protesters in Wales, and the impact of Welsh translations of seminal revolutionary texts such as Thomas Paine’s ‘Rights of Man’, and Volney’s ‘Ruins of Empire’._x000D_ _x000D_ Later large scale protests saw the collusion of Pembrokeshire peasants with the French invaders of 1797, uprisings in Merthyr in the 1830s, and the famous ‘Rebecca Riots’ of the 1840s, all of which were to seriously challenge the British state. This book therefore offers an examination of both the underlying causes of unrest and disorder, and an explanation of how the authorities coped with these challenges to the power of the church and state. _x000D_ _x000D_ Crucially, and controversially, Thomas questions the received wisdom that non-conformism was politically radical and sought to improve the conditions of the poor. By exploring the attitudes of the powerful nonconformist bodies, he offers a reassessment of the social history of religion in Wales, in which the nonconformist clergy actually formed a religious oligarchy in its truest sense, and bore all the hallmarks of being conservative, inactive and exclusive. Using previously unpublished sources, Social Disorder in Britain is an important contribution to the study of the history of religion, social protest and the rise of revolutionary movements, and will be essential reading for students of British history as well as those interested in revolution more generally.
