This book provides a comprehensive view of research in lens developmental biology, emphasising technical and molecular breakthroughs. Elucidation of the mechanisms that govern lens development has enabled us to understand how the normal lens forms and how developmental processes are involved in the maintenance of its normal structure, function and growth throughout life. This knowledge is fundamental to our understanding of many lens disorders. The ocular lens has also become a model for understanding the developmental biology of more complex organ systems. In this 2004 book, leading experts in lens cell biology and development discuss lens evolution, induction, morphology, the regulation of the lens cell cycle and fiber cell differentiation, as well as lens regeneration. This book is an authoritative treatment of the subject that will serve as a reference for graduate students and research scientists in developmental biology and in the visual sciences, as well as for ophthalmologists.

The eye has fascinated scientists from the earliest days of biological investigation. The diversity of its parts and the precision of their interac tion make it a favorite model system for a variety of developmental studies. The eye is a particularly valuable experimental system not only because its tissues provide examples of fundamental processes. but also because it is a prominent and easily accessible structure at very early embryonic ages. In order to provide an open forum for investigators working on all aspects of ocular development. a series of symposia on ocular and visual development was initiated in 1973. A major objective of the symposia has been to foster communication between the basic research worker and the clinical community. It is our feeling that much can be learned on both sides from this interaction. The idea for an informal meeting allowing maximum exchange of ideas originated with Dr. Leon Canbeub. who supplied the necessary driving force that made the series a reality. Each symposium has concentrated on a different aspect of ocular development. Speakers have been selected to approach related topics from different perspec tives.

Since ocular therapeutics and drug delivery is a subject of interest to specialists from various disciplines such as chemical, biochemical, medical, pharmaceutical, and toxicological, it truly presents a unique situation requiring a multi-disciplinary approach in understanding and addressing various problems. Yet we see that scientists associated with these areas are working, by and large, independently of one another, thus limiting dissemination of knowledge, experience and ideas that would greatly enhance the overall progress in this area of research. Regrettably, the information currently available in ocular therapeutics and drug delivery, though extensive, is still fragmented into various disciplines making meaningful synthesis difficult. Several books are available that cover one or two aspects of the multi-disciplinary fields on an individual basis; however, none is available that covers all of them. The chapters contained in this book are specific to various interrelated areas of ocular therapeutics and drug delivery and are written by acknowledged experts from both academia and industry. The book itself is divided into five parts, namely: (I) overview, basic principles, and methodology; (II) pathopharmacology and clinical applications; (III) chemical/ biochemical approaches to ocular drug delivery; (IV) formulation and drug delivery considerations; and (V) industrial and regulatory considerations. Individual chapters in each section, apart from presenting a concise text, entail an extensive listing of references.

This handbook offers a succinct study of Childhood Development Paediatrics with practical applications for helping the child and family through all areas of the developmental process. The book covers diverse topics like developmental delay, learning difficulties, attention deficit disorders, autism, Asperger syndrome, behaviour difficulties, language disorders, school refusal, bullying, emotional difficulties, neurological impairments that affect development (examples being cerebral palsy and brain injury) and motor coordination problems. It also offers online case scenarios on autism, ADHD, school refusal and truancy, cerebral palsy and child abuse and neglect. The cases are followed by questions to test the acquired knowledge of the student on these topics. This practical guide to child development is ideal for trainee paediatricians, registrars, paediatricians and general practitioners. Deals with developmental issues unlike comprehensive paediatric or child psychiatry texts Concise text providing practical tips Clinically and practically orientated (e.g. history, physical examination, assessment techniques) Comparison of normal and abnormal/normal development Definitions (Chapters.8,11,12) to clarify terms Several chapters (e.g. Chapters 8,9,10) inform about special problems/illnesses, which are increasing in incidence Online case scenarios on autism, ADHD, school refusal and truancy, cerebral palsy and child abuse and neglect are available on Student Consult. Combines physical and psychological problems in the development of children, which might be already present at birth (Cerebral Palsy) or which might be apparent later in life (Chapter 8)
