Firmly based on the authors’ personal experience, this book tackles a wide range of issues relating to the teaching of the arts in the primary school. The authors illustrate how primary children of all ages can be educated to both know about and to practice all the major art forms, and how a school staff can effectively accommodate and practice them all, even within the constraints of the National Curriculum. This book is unique in primary school education terms, as its primary focus is specific and it embraces every major art form – dance, drama, literature, music, visual arts and film.

Moving Lessons is an insightful look at the origins and influence of dance in American universities, focusing on Margaret H'Doubler, who established the first university courses and the first degree program in dance. Janice Ross shows that H'Doubler was both emblematic of her time and an innovator who made deep imprints in American culture. An authentic "New Woman", H'Doubler emerged from a sheltered female Victorian world to take action in the public sphere, and she changed the way Americans thought, not just about female physicality but also about higher education for women.Ross brings together many discourses -- from dance history, pedagogical theory, women's history, feminist theory, American history, and the history of the body -- in intelligent, exciting, and illuminating ways. She shows how H'Doubler, like Isadora Duncan and other modern dancers, helped to raise dance in the eyes of the middle class from its despised status as lower-class entertainment and "dangerous" social interactionto a serious enterprise.

Sustainability, globalization, the rapid growth of knowledge and the need for internationally minded citizens require a rethinking of education. Concept based inquiry learning has been offered for over a century as an alternative to traditional education centered on textbooks, invasive standardized testing and control external to the student. Yet the widespread change in teaching styles required to shift education to meet 21st century requirements has been sporadic at best. This book tells several stories. The first is a teacher’s journey to discover a different way of teaching and learning. The second is a summary of the theory used to explain and justify the change in pedagogy to the wider school community. The third are stories from student and teachers who practice inquiry learning. The result is a description of 6 essential elements for a successful inquiry learning environment. Although this research was conducted at a single school, it offers important insights for other schools who are considering change to a more constructivist, sustainable approach to education. Marcia Behrenbruch has taught at all levels of schooling from the early years to year 12. She has lived and worked in Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, Vietnam and Singapore. Most of her 15 years in school administration focused on curriculum innovation and facilitating change. She completed her doctoral studies at Melbourne Graduate School of Education and is currently a global head of professional development for an international not-for-profit educational organization.
