Computational Modeling of Multiphase Geomaterials discusses how numerical methods play a very important role in geotechnical engineering and in the related activity of computational geotechnics. It shows how numerical methods and constitutive modeling can help predict the behavior of geomaterials such as soil and rock. After presenting the fundamentals of continuum mechanics, the book explores recent advances in the use of modeling and numerical methods for multiphase geomaterial applications. The authors describe the constitutive modeling of soils for rate-dependent behavior, strain localization, multiphase theory, and applications in the context of large deformations. They also emphasize viscoplasticity and water–soil coupling. Drawing on the authors’ well-regarded work in the field, this book provides you with the knowledge and tools to tackle problems in geomechanics. It gives you a comprehensive understanding of how to apply continuum mechanics, constitutive modeling, finite element analysis, and numerical methods to predict the behavior of soil and rock.

This book contains the scientific contributions to the 11th International Workshop on Bifurcation and Degradation in Geomaterials (IWBDG) held in Limassol-Cyprus, May 21-25, 2017. The IWBDG series have grown in size and scope, since their inception 30 years ago in Germany, covering more and wider areas of geomaterials and geomechanics research including modern trends. The papers cover a wide range of topics including advances in instabilities, localized and diffuse failure, micromechanical, multiscale phenomena, multiphysics modeling and other related topics. This volume gathers a series of manuscript by brilliant international scholars who work on modern recent advances in experimental, theoretical and numerical methods. The theoretical and applied mechanics are linked successfully with engineering applications in traditional and in emerging fields, such as geomechanics for the energy and the environment. The quality of the contributed papers has benefited from the peer review process by expert referees. This book can be used as a useful reference for research students, academics and practicing engineers who are interested in the instability and degradation problems in geomaterials, geomechanics, geotechnical engineering and other related applications.

These proceedings represent the latest advances in the mechanics of porous materials, known as poromechanics. The porous materials considered are solids containing voids that are impregnated with fluid. The focus is on the mechanical interactions of the inhomogeneous solid with the single- or multi-phase fluid under the loading of mechanical force, fluid pressure, thermal, chemical, and magnetic fields. The response time can be in static, diffusional, and dynamic ranges. The length scale can start from nano, to micro, macro, and up to field scales. Its application covers many branches of science and engineering, including geophysics, geomechanics, composite materials, biomechanics, acoustics, seismicity, civil, mechanical, environmental, and petroleum engineering. The approaches taken include analytical, computational, and experimental. To honor the pioneering contributions of Maurice A. Biot (1905-1985) to poromechanics, the Biot Conference on Poromechanics was convened for the first time in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium in 1998. The success of the first conference led to the 2nd Biot Conference held in Grenoble, France in 2002. To celebrate the centennial birthday of Biot (May 25, 2005), the 3rd Biot Conference on Poromechanics was held at the University of Oklahoma, Norman, Oklahoma, U.S.A., on May 24-27, 2005.

Presently, there is a strong need for better understanding of the limits of the multi-scale and multi-physics methodology in terms of its practical value for modeling the behavior of a given engineering structure, regarding the solution cost, result interpretation and model reliability. The issues concerning the formulation of a multi-physics problem, capturing the different scales in the solution and providing error estimates and bounds on the computed solution should all be examined. Another key issue in that sense concerns our ability to bring these advances in multi-scale and multi-physics nonlinear analysis to bear upon the solution of practically unlimited new capabilities of achieving the optimal design of structures under extreme conditions. In other words, the necessity for introducing a refined modeling approach is not only created by available computational tools, but more importantly to provide a better insight into any potential weakness of a structural system on hand and thus achieve a more economical design. The latter is becoming of paramount importance nowadays under ever increasing requirements of the market economies, where in a number of very competitive industrial sectors the need for economic design leads naturally towards the criteria based on ultimate limit state of a particular structural system on hand. This book allows exchange of the ideas on advanced computational models and techniques applicable to interdisciplinary, coupled and interaction problems, which are governing the complex behavior of engineering structures.

As the geotechnical engineering profession increasingly draws upon analytical modeling implemented in numerical modeling, the demand for more advanced, and thus more accurate, depictions of soil behavior will be needed. Time-Dependent Behavior of Geomaterials: Experimental Observations and Modeling Approaches provides civil engineers and researchers working in this area with a variety of geomechanics modeling tools ranging from field testing interpretation to modeling of geotechnical design responses to various loading conditions. With this book in hand, both researchers and practitioners receive a more sophisticated treatment of complex behavior topics including: interpretation and modelling of test results from short-term field instrumentation as they apply to long-term phenomenon (e.g., landslides); validation of modelling for interpreting and extrapolating laboratory test results for field applications; and understanding the complexities of measurements and modelling of highly complex, multiphase, anisotropic geomaterials Interpretation and modelling of test results from short-term field instrumentation as they apply to long-term phenomenon Validation of modelling for interpreting and extrapolating laboratory test results for field applications Understanding the complexities of measurements and modelling of highly complex, multiphase, anisotropic geomaterials
