Not illustrated. 1894 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER V CHARACTERS AND CONTRASTS--CLOUDS OF INVERSION 51. Before proceeding with a detailed description of the clouds under this heading, it may be advisable, even at the price of repetition, to place before the reader the broad distinction in formation between these clouds and those dealt with in the previous chapter. This distinction is, that whereas clouds of Interfret are caused by the interaction of more or less horizontal currents of different velocities or directions, clouds of Inversion are caused by condensation in an upward direction in more or less vertical currents, although the shape of the clouds of the latter class may be affected by differences of velocity and direction in the horizontal movements of the air. Cumulo-rudimen turn 52. Many misleading titles, such as Fracto-cumulus and Cumulo-frustum, have been applied to this wellknown cloud, but these, as we shall see later, lead us to erroneously presuppose that the cloud is a brokendown and degraded form of Cumulus. The range of altitude of the rudimentary cloud is small. The mean altitude, as given in Table III., is 1500 feet (458 m.) above mean sea-level. But in reference to this variety of cloud it is important to observe that in the tropical and extra-tropical latitudes the level is higher in summer than in winter, and that the alteration of level is greater over the land than over the open sea, For the heating of the floor of the atmosphere causes vapour to remain in the state of vapour near that floor, and raises the level at which condensation is possible; and it is the atmosphere which exists over a land-surface which has its temperature specially raised by insolation, since the solid surface conducts less heat downward than the liquid, and parts with more heat...

A stunning literary thriller set in rural Vermont from the much praised author of Nightswimmer and Clara's Heart Once a major reporter for a national newspaper, Catherine Winslow has retreated to the Upper Valley of Vermont to write a household hints column. While out walking during an early spring thaw, Catherine discovers the body of a woman leaning against an apple tree near her house. From the corpse's pink parka, Winslow recognizes her as the latest victim of a serial killer, a woman reported missing weeks before during a blizzard. When her neighbor, a forensic psychiatrist, is pulled into the investigation, Catherine begins to discover some unexpected connections to the serial murders. One is that the murders might be based on a rare unfinished Wilkie Collins novel that is missing from her personal library. The other is her much younger lover from her failed affair has unexpectedly resurfaced and is trying to maneuver his way back into her affections. Elegant, haunting and profoundly gripping, Cloudland is an ingenious psychological trap baited with murder, deception and the intricacies of desire.

In this collection, seven bilingual stories showcase the richness of Latin American folklore, fantasy, and fiction. Latin American literature is rooted in the history and culture of the world from which it arises, and this book explores many facets of those roots within everyday occurrences, historical events, and traditional folk stories, sometimes using imaginary characters in real situations and other times, real characters in fanciful situations. Transporting readers to such places as the Amazon jungle and nineteenth-century Bogotá or through epic events of the Latin American War of Independence, the author has compiled, researched, and invented stories by turns whimsical and deeply moving, and has cast them, with a dose of his own imagination, in an agile, poetic language that keeps readers enthralled from start to finish. Whatever the subject matter - be it a fictitious chihuahua (a breed native to Latin America), a fresh batch of tamales, an Amazon legend, a piñata maker, a hero of Latin American independence, a generations-old priest's tale, or a magnificent journey through Andean topography - the author leads us in among the intertwining roots of Latin American life and shows us its reality through a different prism, one in which the everyday is fantastical and fantasy seems commonplace.

The first story is of ice... The shadow-monger dragged itself forwards in shrugs. It was a writhe of tentacles coiling around each other, groping the air then shrinking back. The cloud boy hunched over and pressed his face against the glass, so close Lucy could see his feathery lashes. She watched a tentacle of darkness like a living shadow pour over the boy's shoulder and wrap itself around his neck. Then with one quick sudden tug, the shadow-monger pulled the cloud boy back and smothered him in darkness. The next instant, Lucy found herself staring at blank blue sky. After a year of endless rain, cities are flooded; families are living on rooftops. Called into a world above the clouds, Lucy stumbles across a strange society of injustice, weird beauty, and danger. With a few odd companions, Lucy must travel across Cloudland and face the seemingly impenetrable force of Kazia, the ice queen, in a bid to stop the world from drowning and the dawning of an Age of Ice. Called into the clouds to face an icy enemy, will Lucy ever find her way home?
