A captivating, beautifully illustrated, one-of-a-kind color compendium of the flowers, fruits, herbs, trees, seeds, and grasses cited in the works of the world’s greatest playwright, William Shakespeare, accompanied by their companion quotes from all of his plays and poems. With a foreword by Dame Helen Mirren—the first foreword she has ever contributed. In this striking compilation, Shakespeare historian Gerit Quealy and respected Japanese artist Sumié Hasegawa combine their knowledge and skill in this first and only book that examines every plant that appears in the works of Shakespeare. Botanical Shakespeare opens with a brief look at the Bard’s relationship to the plants mentioned in his works—a diversity that illuminates his knowledge of the science of botany, as well as the colloquy, revealing his unmatched skill for creating metaphorical connections and interweaving substantive philosophy. At the heart of the book are "portraits" of the over 170 flowers, fruits, grains, grasses, trees, herbs, seeds and vegetables that Shakespeare mentions in his plays and poems. Botanical Shakespeare features a gorgeous color illustration of each, giving a "face" to the name, alongside the specific text in which it appears and the character(s) who utter the lines in which it is mentioned. This fascinating visual compendium also includes a dictionary describing each plant—such as Eglantine, a wild rose with a slight prickle, cherished for its singular scent, superior to any other rose; and the difference between apples and apple-john—along with indices listing the botanical by play/poem, by character, and genus for easy reference, ideal for gardeners and thoughtful birthday gift-giving. This breathtaking, incomparable collection of exquisite artwork and companion quotes offers unique depth and insight into Shakespeare and his timeless work through the unusual perspective of the plants themselves.

Positioned within current ecocritical scholarship, this volume is the first book-length study of the representations of plants in contemporary American, English, and Australian poetry. Through readings of botanically-minded writers including Les Murray, Louise Glück, and Alice Oswald, it addresses the relationship between language and the subjectivity, agency, sentience, consciousness, and intelligence of vegetal life. Scientific, philosophical, and literary frameworks enable the author to develop an interdisciplinary approach to examining the role of plants in poetry. Drawing from recent plant science and contributing to the exciting new field of critical plant studies, the author develops a methodology he calls "botanical criticism" that aims to redress the lack of emphasis on plant life in studies of poetry. As a subset of ecocriticism, botanical criticism investigates how poets engage with plants literally and figuratively, materially and symbolically, in their works. Key themes covered in this volume include plants as invasives and weeds in human settings; as sources of physical and spiritual nourishment; as signifiers of region, home, and identity; as objects of aesthetics and objectivism; and, crucially, as beings with their own perspectives, voices, and modes of dialogue. Ryan demonstrates that poetic imagination is as essential as scientific rationality to elucidating and appreciating the mysteries of plant-being. This book will appeal to a multidisciplinary readership in the fields of ecocriticism, ecopoetry, environmental humanities, and ecocultural studies, and will be of interest to researchers in the emerging area of critical plant studies.

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1905 edition. Excerpt: his own" (Dowden). For the references to the poet's the Sonnets, see p. 41 above. 3. Furrows. Cf. Sonn. 2 above, and Rich. III. i. 3. 229. 4. Expiate. Bring to an end. Cf. Rich. III. iii. 3. 23: "Make haste; the hour of death is expiate." Here, as there, Steevens conjectures "expirate," which White and Hudson adopt. Surely there is no need of coining a word to replace one which S. twice uses and which can be plausibly explained. Malone quotes Chapman's Byron's Conspiracie, in which an old courtier speaks of himself as " A poor and expiate humour of the court." XXIII 1. Vnperfect. Used by S. only here; but unperfectness occurs in Oth. ii. 3. 298. Imperfect we find in Sonn. 43. 11 and elsewhere, and imperfection six times in the plays. On the present passage, cf. Cor. v. 3. 40: --"Like a dull actor now, I have forgot my part, and I am out, Even to a full disgrace." 2. Besides. For the prepositional use, cf. T. N, iv. 2. 92: "Alas, sir, how fell you besides your five wits?" 3. Replete with too much rage. The rage overcoming self-control. 5. For fear of trust. Fearing to trust myself. Schmidt makes it = " doubting of being trusted;" but the context clearly confirms the explanation I have given. Dowden calls attention to the construction of the first eight lines, 5, 6 referring to 1, 2, and 7, 8, to 3. 4 6. Ceremony. Hudson says that the word "is here used as a trisyllable, as if spelt cer'mony;" but how he would scan the verse I cannot imagine. The word is clearly a quadrisyllable, as almost always in S. 9. Books. Sewell reads " looks;" but the old reading is supported by 13 below. The books, as Dowden remarks, are probably the manuscript books in which the poet writes his sonnets. 12. That tongue. Probably = any tongue, however eloquent, ...
