Designed for music technology students, enthusiasts, and professionals, Audio Processes: Musical Analysis, Modification, Synthesis, and Control describes the practical design of audio processes, with a step-by-step approach from basic concepts all the way to sophisticated effects and synthesizers. The themes of analysis, modification, synthesis, and control are covered in an accessible manner and without requiring extensive mathematical skills. The order of material aids the progressive accumulation of understanding, but topics are sufficiently contained that those with prior experience can read individual chapters directly. Extensively supported with block diagrams, algorithms, and audio plots, the ideas and designs are applicable to a wide variety of contexts. The presentation style enables readers to create their own implementations, whatever their preferred programming language or environment. The designs described are practical and extensible, providing a platform for the creation of professional quality results for many different audio applications. There is an accompanying website (, which provides further material and examples, to support the book and aid in process development. This book includes: A comprehensive range of audio processes, both popular and less well known, extensively supported with block diagrams and other easily understood visual forms. Detailed descriptions suitable for readers who are new to the subject, and ideas to inspire those with more experience. Designs for a wide range of audio contexts that are easily implemented in visual dataflow environments, as well as conventional programming languages.

CMMR is an annual event focusing on important aspects of computer music. CMMR 2007 was the fourth event in this series and was co-organized by A- borg University Esbjerg, Denmark (http: //www. aaue. dk) and Laboratoire de M ecanique et d Acoustique, CNRS in Marseille, France (http: //www. lma. cnrs-mrs. fr). The conference was held in Copenhagen during 27 31 August, 2007 jointly with the International Computer Music Conference 2007 (ICMC2007). The ?rst three editions of CMMR were a great success and gathered hi- quality papers by prominent researchers from the ?eld of computer music. The post-proceedings of these conferences were published by Springer in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series (LNCS 2771, LNCS 3310, LNCS 3902). The current edition follows the lineage of the previous ones, including the collection of 33 papers specially reviewed and corrected for this post-proceedings volume. The ?eld of computer music is interdisciplinary by nature and closely related to a number of computer science and engineering areas such as information retrieval, programming, human-computer interaction, digital libraries, hyp- media, arti?cial intelligence, acoustics, and signal processing. In 2007, CMMR focussed on a challenging theme: The Sense of Sounds. De?ning the notion of sense of sounds is intricate, since it refers to a very general concept that can be addressed through a large number of domains (philosophy, cognition, music analysis and musicology, perception, acoustics, signal processing)."

This book contains a complete and accurate mathematical treatment of the sounds of music with an emphasis on musical timbre. The book spans the range from tutorial introduction to advanced research and application to speculative assessment of its various techniques. All the contributors use a generalized additive sine wave model for describing musical timbre which gives a conceptual unity, but is of sufficient utility to be adapted to many different tasks.

Karlheinz Brandenburg and Mark Kahrs With the advent of multimedia, digital signal processing (DSP) of sound has emerged from the shadow of bandwidth limited speech processing. Today, the main appli cations of audio DSP are high quality audio coding and the digital generation and manipulation of music signals. They share common research topics including percep tual measurement techniques and analysis/synthesis methods. Smaller but nonetheless very important topics are hearing aids using signal processing technology and hardware architectures for digital signal processing of audio. In all these areas the last decade has seen a significant amount of application oriented research. The topics covered here coincide with the topics covered in the biannual work shop on “Applications of Signal Processing to Audio and Acoustics”. This event is sponsored by the IEEE Signal Processing Society (Technical Committee on Audio and Electroacoustics) and takes place at Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, New York. A short overview of each chapter will illustrate the wide variety of technical material presented in the chapters of this book. John Beerends: Perceptual Measurement Techniques. The advent of perceptual measurement techniques is a byproduct of the advent of digital coding for both speech and high quality audio signals. Traditional measurement schemes are bad estimates for the subjective quality after digital coding/decoding. Listening tests are subject to sta tistical uncertainties and the basic question of repeatability in a different environment.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-conference proceedings of the 5th International Symposium on Computer Music Modeling and Retrieval, CMMR 2008 - Genesis of Meaning in Sound and Music, held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in May 2008. The 21 revised full papers presented were specially reviewed and corrected for this proceedings volume. CMMR 2008 seeks to enlarge upon the Sense of Sounds-concept by taking into account the musical structure as a whole. More precisely, the workshop will have as its theme Genesis of Meaning in Sound and Music. The purpose is hereby to establish rigorous research alliances between computer and engineering sciences (information retrieval, programming, acoustics, signal processing) and areas within the humanities (in particular perception, cognition, musicology, philosophy), as well as to globally address the notion of sound meaning and its implications in music, modeling and retrieval.
