jQuery was written to express, in short-order, the concepts essential to intermediate and advanced jQuery development. Its purpose is to instill in you, the reader, practices that jQuery developers take as common knowledge. Each chapter contains concepts essential to becoming a seasoned jQuery developer. This book is intended for two types of readers. The first is someone who has read introductory material on jQuery and is looking for the next logical step. The second type of reader is a JavaScript developer, already versed in another library, now trying to quickly learn jQuery. I crafted this book to be used as my own personal reference point for jQuery concepts. This is exactly the type of book I wish every JavaScript library had available. I found JavaScript books so frustrating, I decided to write my own. The authors of JavaScript books are probably some of the brightest people around. And maybe that's the problem. Maybe they don't know how to relate to those of us who may sometimes struggle to learn. My sister is a wonderful dancer. I dance like Bill Gates. She says, "C'mon, dancing is easy!" Yeah, for her, but not for Bill and me. She'll never teach me to dance until she understands that dancing isn't easy for me. Whether you're a beginner or an experienced coder doesn't matter. Plenty of veterans have told me, "I wish someone had used this approach to teach me [HTML, PHP, jQuery, C#, Ruby, Java, Python—fill in the blank]." Experienced or not, you'll probably like my book if you find other books too dense, too technical, and too unsympathetic to the learner's needs. What you'll especially like, I think, is that the book is just the tip of the iceberg. The larger part is the abundance of interactive exercises that encourage you to practice, practice, practice. You'll agree, I think, that without practice, a coding student might as well be reading a novel. One caveat: If you're an older programmer who has established ways of doing things, you may get bent out of shape by my insistence that you do some things that aren't habitual for you. If you think this might be a problem, please try the free sample of the book before you buy it. Then do a few of the interactive exercises. You'll soon know whether you can tolerate being pushed around by me. Here's what's different about my book: Testing showed that books and courses load up the reader with far too much information at a time. So I divide up the information into little chunks that won't overwhelm anyone. A book on coding doesn't have to be written in impenetrable legalese. It can actually be human-readable. My book is. Most people learn best through examples, so I provide plenty of them. Most important, before you have a chance to forget what you've read in the book, I ask you to fire up your desktop or laptop (not your mobile device) and head over to my website, where you run a set of interactive exercises, practicing everything you've learned—until you're sure you've mastered it. Readers tell me they often start the exercises thinking they know the material cold. and quickly find out they don't. The automated exercise manager keeps you at it until your overconfidence becomes real confidence—confidence that's based on your excellent performance. There are 1,750 exercises in all. They're all interactive, with an automated answer-checker that corrects your missteps and points you in the right direction when you stumble. And they're all free. Readers tell me the combination of book and interactive exercises is involving, fun, frustration-free, addictive, confidence-building, and...well, read the reviews. Racket is a descendant of Lisp, a programming language renowned for its elegance, power, and challenging learning curve. But while Racket retains the functional goodness of Lisp, it was designed with beginning programmers in mind. Realm of Racket is your introduction to the Racket language. In Realm of Racket, you'll learn to program by creating increasingly complex games. Your journey begins with the Guess My Number game and coverage of some basic Racket etiquette. Next you'll dig into syntax and semantics, lists, structures, and conditionals, and learn to work with recursion and the GUI as you build the Robot Snake game. After that it's on to lambda and mutant structs (and an Orc Battle), and fancy loops and the Dice of Doom. Finally, you'll explore laziness, AI, distributed games, and the Hungry Henry game. As you progress through the games, chapter checkpoints and challenges help reinforce what you've learned. Offbeat comics keep things fun along the way. As you travel through the Racket realm, you'll: –Master the quirks of Racket's syntax and semantics –Learn to write concise and elegant functional programs –Create a graphical user interface using the 2htdp/image library –Create a server to handle true multiplayer games Realm of Racket is a lighthearted guide to some serious programming. Read it to see why Racketeers have so much fun!

This refreshing fourth edition of the established evidence-based textbook by Elaine Atkins, Jill Kerr and Emily Goodlad continues to uphold the Cyriax approach to clinical reasoning, assessment, diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. Renamed A Practical Approach to Musculoskeletal Medicine, to reflect globally understood terminology, it focuses on the principles and practice of musculoskeletal medicine, providing practical guidance and tips for clinical practice based on extensive clinical experience and evidence. The book is split into three sections. Section 1 presents the theory underpinning musculoskeletal medicine. The histology and behaviour of the soft tissues follow, with a review of the healing process, to enhance understanding of the effects of injury on the soft tissues. The first section ends with the principles of treatment as applied in musculoskeletal medicine and discusses the techniques of mobilization and injection, aims and application, and indications for use. Section 2 adopts a regional approach. Anatomy is presented, including useful tips on surface marking to locate commonly injured anatomical structures. Assessment, lesions and treatment techniques are discussed for each region as appropriate for the stage in the healing process. Section 3 provides resources to support the recording of assessment and to ensure safety, especially whilst learning the musculoskeletal medicine approach. A Practical Approach to Musculoskeletal Medicine comprehensively and critically discusses current literature. It is a complete reference source for students and postgraduate medical practitioners, physiotherapists, osteopaths and other allied health professionals, including occupational therapists and podiatrists. It is essential reading. Review questions and case scenarios at the end of each chapter to revise key principles of the approach Updates on tendinopathy management (including optimal loading), cervical arterial dysfunction, spinal clinical models and manipulation Over 250 new illustrations and photographs Evolve Resources containing: New taster video clips demonstrating assessment and treatment techniques Self-assessment section Image bank Log on to http://evolve.elsevier.com/Atkins/msk

In The Liar in Your Life, psychology professor Robert Feldman, one of the world's leading authorities on deception, draws on his immense body of knowledge to give fresh insights into how and why we lie, how our culture has become increasingly tolerant of deception, the cost it exacts on us, and what to do about it. His work is at once surprising and sobering, full of corrections for common myths and explanations of pervasive oversimplifications. Feldman examines marital infidelity, little white lies, career-driven resumé lies, and how we teach children to lie. Along the way, he reveals-despite our beliefs to the contrary- how it is nearly impossible to spot a liar (studies have shown no relationship between nervousness, lack of eye contact, or a trembling voice, and acts of deception). He also provides startling evidence of just how integral lying is to our culture; indeed, his research shows that two people, meeting for the first time, will lie to each other an average of three times in the first ten minutes of a conversation. Feldman uses this discussion of deception to explore ways we can cope with infidelity, betrayal, and mistrust, in our friends and family. He also describes the lies we tell ourselves: Sometimes, the liar in your life is the person you see in the mirror. With incisive clarity and wry wit, Feldman has written a truthful book for anyone who whose life has been touched by deception.
