This novel won both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award in 195. An allegorical story of World War I, set in the trenches in France and dealing ostensibly with a mutiny in a French regiment, it was originally considered a sharp departure for Faulkner. Recently it has come to be recognized as one of his major works and an essential part of the Faulkner oeuvre. Faulkner himself fought in the war, and his descriptions of it "rise to magnificence," according to The New York Times, and include, in Malcolm Cowley's words, "some of the most powerful scenes he ever conceived."

Jacob Ericson is a quiet, kind and somewhat simple man who works as a ranch hand for crotchety Professor Carter and his crippled daughter, Sharon, in California's Mojave Desert in the 1920s. Jacob is a good man, genuine, honorable, but hardly extraordinary–until he miraculously heals a dying calf with his hands. However, while he is content to cure the town's animals, it isn't long before he is persuaded to use his gift in other ways. When Sharon, whom he adores, begs him to heal her leg, he cannot deny her. His acquiescence causes them both to be exploited. Sharon runs away to Los Angeles to pursue her dreams of stardom. Jacob follows her, hopeful that they will meet again. And they do–as miserable performers in a seedy stage show. While they plan their escape from the dreary stage life, Jacob is asked to heal a self–absorbed young millionaire. And with his assent, Jacob's plans and all of his dreams begin to crumble. Written in tight, vivid, and seamlessly crafter prose, this previously unpublished tale by two of the greatest storytellers of the twentieth century shows the dangers a magical gift holds for even the noblest of characters.

When the boatman ferrying souls of the dead across the river is on holiday, we linger on the far shore of hell, sweat and study the terrain. For that reason we move slow motion through the novel, a frieze of images projected by memory and desire, ghosts haunting the past activated by the imminence of the future. Like an ancient fable the story unwinds on that far shore, who will be plunged into darkness, who will survive? As one eye glances quickly at the past, the other scanning ahead, The Boatman’s Holiday focuses primarily on five transitional years in the nineteen sixties. Deliberately projected in a fusion of styles and forms, the absorbing characters we meet are artists, journalists, a yoga master, a musician, a writer, an inventor and his wife, and two twenty something students, all a little dislocated, even lost, as they examine the emotional and aesthetic perplexities in their lives.

Revolution rocks and rolls. An ex-TV star seizes power and tries to turn daily life into an endless film. Temporary People is a political fable of the first order. Set on the island of Bamerita, a country whose “history is like the rim of a wheel made to turn round and round, our political cycles nothing if not redundant,” Gillis’s third novel, following Walter Falls and The Weight of Nothing, Temporary People explores the human condition in all its most vulnerable exposures. A brilliant send up of modern life turned inside out by the inescapable powers of history and fate, filled with pathos and humor, Gillis deftly explores the complexities of survival and choice in a world perpetually on the verge of going mad. Sharp and satirical, a breathtakingly paced romp, the end will leave you drop-jawed and wanting more. Temporary People is a book for the ages and once again Gillis delivers.

Most folks have one big lie that they let themselves believe. Adam Walker believed that all his problems would be over if he could just become a paleontologist. So when he was accepted into graduate school at Sunshine State University in Senova, Florida, he was ecstatic. People should be careful what they wish for. Adam found himself marooned in a pink-and-green wonderland of strange professors, campus jocks, and five-leaf clovers. Fortunately, his fellow students: Frank, Tom, Jessica, Cathy, and Susan, were there to help him understand life in a theme park university. Life can be pretty stressful when you’re walking in quaternary alluvium.
