'Nothing is so exhausting as indecision, and nothing is so futile' - Bertrand Russell .. and teachers, parents and carers worry that the decisions that children and young people make might be unwise or dangerous. Decision making is a skill involving both a cognitive and an affective process. The ability to: " recognize the thoughts and feelings; " consider the consequences; " choose the best outcome; is a highly valued facility leading to resilience, achievement and responsibility. The skill can be taught and in these three volumes the authors provide all the materials needed to teach a course on decision making at each age level. The programme provides a menu of stories related to the real life experiences of the young people. Topics are selected to be age appropriate and the series includes: " Stealing; " Lying; " Social behaviours; " Risks; " Justice; " Loss,Grief and Bereavement; " Prejudice; " First love; " Disability; " Leaving home; " Family relationships. The teacher notes indicate 'stopping points' where reflection and discussion is encouraged. A choice of endings is offered or the young people can develop their own ideas about what might happen next. The course can be introduced at any age or used to develop the skills through school life from early years to the teens. 'The need to work with children to help them understand the complexity of the place and the relationships within which they are growing up is greater than ever. This programme of stories, developed through Circle Time, gives a clear and challenging context for this work to develop' - Support For Learning 'You'd be hard pushed to find a better decision making programme than this excellent set of books... This series will undoubtedly kick-start conversation, prod thinking and stimulate classroom debate' - Times Educational Supplement Magazine Margaret Collins is a former headteacher of infant and first schools. She is now Senior Visiting Fellow in the School of Education at the University of Southampton. She researches children's perceptions of health education topics, writes teaching materials for children, books and articles on PSHE. Other books in the series include Tina Rae's Good Choices and Phil Carradice's Life Choices

Drawing is a language, projected by children and adults, reflecting their joy and pain. It is used extensively by clinical psychologists, art therapists, social workers, and other mental health professionals in the assessment and treatment of children, adolescents, adults, and couples. This book brings together a renowned group of professionals to analyze the research and application of the most popular assessment and treatment tools. Tests discussed include the Draw-a-Person Test, the House-Tree-Person Test, the Kinetic Family Drawing Test, the Art Therapy-Projective Imagery Assessment, and the Wartegg Drawing Completion Test. Working with sexually and physically abused children, assessing clients with anorexia nervosa, and the influence of osteopathic treatment on drawings are some of the special topics considered. Numerous case studies are also included.

Image analysis is one of the most challenging areas in today's computer sci ence, and image technologies are used in a host of applications. This book concentrates on image textures and presents novel techniques for their sim ulation, retrieval, and segmentation using specific Gibbs random fields with multiple pairwise interaction between signals as probabilistic image models. These models and techniques were developed mainly during the previous five years (in relation to April 1999 when these words were written). While scanning these pages you may notice that, in spite of long equa tions, the mathematical background is extremely simple. I have tried to avoid complex abstract constructions and give explicit physical (to be spe cific, "image-based") explanations to all the mathematical notions involved. Therefore it is hoped that the book can be easily read both by professionals and graduate students in computer science and electrical engineering who take an interest in image analysis and synthesis. Perhaps, mathematicians studying applications of random fields may find here some less traditional, and thus controversial, views and techniques.

Some acting careers are made by one great role and some fall into obscurity when one is declined. Would Al Pacino be the star he is today if Robert Redford had accepted the role of Michael Corleone in The Godfather? Imagine Tom Hanks rejecting Uma Thurman, saying that she acted like someone in a high school play when she auditioned to play opposite him in The Bonfire of the Vanities. Picture Danny Thomas as The Godfather, or Marilyn Monroe as Cleopatra. This reference work lists hundreds of such stories: actors who didn’t get cast or who turned down certain parts. Each entry, organized alphabetically by film title, gives the character and actor cast, a list of other actors considered for that role, and the details of the casting decision. Information is drawn from extensive research and interviews. From About Last Night (which John Belushi turned down at his brother’s urging) to Zulu (in which Michael Caine was not cast because he didn’t look “Cockney” enough), this book lets you imagine how different your favorite films could have been.

Combinatorics Is The Mathematics Of Counting, Selecting And Arranging Objects. Combinatorics Include The Theory Of Permutations And Combinations. These Topics Have An Enormous Range Of Applications In Pure And Applied Mathematics And Computer Science. These Are Processes By Which We Organize Sets So That We Can Interpret And Apply The Data They Contain. Generally Speaking, Combinatorial Questions Ask Whether A Subset Of A Given Set Can Be Chosen And Arranged In A Way That Conforms With Certain Constraints And, If So, In How Many Ways It Can Be Done. Applications Of Combinatorics Play A Major Role In The Analysis Of Algorithms. For Example, It Is Often Necessary In Such Analysis To Count The Average Number Of Times That A Particular Portion Of An Algorithm Is Executed Over All Possible Data Sets. This Topic Also Includes Solution Of Difference Equations. Differences Are Required For Analysis Of Algorithmic Complexity, And Since Computers Are Frequently Used In The Numerical Solution Of Differential Equations Via Their Discretized Versions Which Are Difference Equations. It Also Deals With Questions About Configurations Of Sets, Families Of Finite Sets That Overlap According To Some Prescribed Numerical Or Geometrical Conditions. Skill In Using Combinatorial Techniques Is Needed In Almost Every Discipline Where Mathematics Is Applied.Salient Features * Over 1000 Problems Are Used To Illustrate Concepts, Related To Different Topics, And Introduce Applications. * Over 1000 Exercises In The Text With Many Different Types Of Questions Posed. * Precise Mathematical Language Is Used Without Excessive Formalism And Abstraction. * Precise Mathematical Language Is Used Without Excessive Formalism And Abstraction. * Problem Sets Are Started Clearly And Unambiguously And All Are Carefully Graded For Various Levels Of Difficulty.
